Realistic goals?

Postby Prancer » June 23rd, 2006, 11:26 am

I havent set any real goals yet. Just my ending weight and I did that based on what it will take to get my BMI down in the normal range. I might readjust that in the future.

Anyway...I was trying to set up some mini like goals to help get me thru. I know DH will be willing to give me rewards if I reach them.

Do you think these are realistic?

DH Birthday..August 18, lose 32 making me 230 (MF 7 weeks)
Twins Bday..Sept 3, lose 42 making me 220 (MF 10 weeks)
My bday..Oct 23, lose 63 putting me in onderland (MF 18 weeks)

Is that reasonable?? I estimated 10 for my first week and then 3 every week after that. I am 1/2 way into my first week and have lost 7 already.

I think goals are excellent... I don't have a goal by a certain date, but by weight. Like at 40 lbs I'm getting a pedicure. :) Stuff like that. I just didn't want to be disappointed in myself, if I didn't make a certain weight by a certain date....I'm at 17 weeks(I think) and have only lost 38lbs roughly. I'll take it though, however fast or slow it wants to come off. :)

The problem I see with setting date goals is if you fall short it might upset you too much. I am on week 17 and have lost 48 lbs. I average 3 lbs a week but remember everyone loses differently and you might have a small plateau or only lose a pound or two a week.

I like it better to do small rewards when you hit a milestone. Like 20 lbs, 30 lbs, 40 lbs etc. That way you don't get discouraged if you don't hit your number goal by your date.

Just my 2 cents.

I somewhat agree. I do mini goals. Like by next Monday I want to weigh 249. I want to be out of the 250's. I try not to make LONG term goals because, like was mentioned, you could hit plateus or get sick or just start losing more slowly. I try to do it a week at a time. It really makes my Monday more exciting. I am a very competitive person, it makes me feel like I am "winning" when I reach my mini goals.

Thanks for the input, it makes sense what you all said. I am going to rethink and see what I come up with. Maybe DH and I can discuss it tonight.

yeah i have my goal set for a date but i see myself readjusting it and honestly if i get to like 150 or 140 and am satisfied with how i look im not going to go all the way down to 135. its just tentative. i plan on getting in more toning and weight training and that always makes you look less than you weigh anyways so if i reach 140 but look like im 125 or something who is going to know? i plan on playing around with my goal and the date i want to make it by ,.like zinkette though i definitely am competitive so setting a date sorta keeps me in line.

I'm with most of the others. If I had set time-based goals, I'd have gotten frustrated and quit a long time ago. I go with periodic rewards instead. We all lose in our own time, and you can drive yourself crazy trying to make your body lose faster.

Plus even now, I'm much more interested in my size/shape than my actual weight. I've always said I'd be OK weighing 200 pounds, as long as I fit into a size 6.

I agree with the others. I really split my goals into reasonable spans...and picked cool rewards...

My first was to get from Obese to Overweight...on the BMI chart
My second was Onederland...
My 3rd was 50lbs...
My 4th was to weigh what my driver's license says...
My next is to go from Overweight to Healthy on the BMI chart 167!
After that, my goal IS MY GOAL!

If I had set date goals, I wouldn't have made them, I shrink right along, then I stall.

Like everyone else, the whole time issue is what tripped me up on other programs...combined with the fact that I seemed to lose at a rate that was only 25% of what was to be expected.

My goal is like the NCLB progress expectation: make SOME improvement in all areas. Hence, my goal is to work on my health every day. Hopefully, at the end of the week, I'll show a loss (and I have, even if it's been a partial pound). If not, I have some record of what I'm doing NOW that I wasn't doing or hadn't done in a long time to get healthy.

Like DeDe, I have weight goals:
+ get into the 240s
+ actually register on the BMI chart
+ size 22
+ under 200
+ overweight instead of obese (165)
+ a healthy weight (I think that's 140)
+ size 12 or lower
Here's to our mutual success! :buddies: --Diana
