hi folks,

i am starting this Medifast Diet today. I am 40 years old, i weigh about 370 #, and i embarassed to say that i am a physician. i of all people should know the dangers of obesity, and i am upset at myself for letting myself get this big. i could go into a diatribe about what happened, but i prefer to look to the future and not backwards.

i know it works, and i am sure i will lose weight. so here goes, and greetings to all.

my only concern is the sagging skin that tends to occur with rapid weight loss. If anyone has had any experience with this please let me know.....i would appreciate it greatly.

tubbywonkanobie-

I love your user name! It makes me smile! Welcome to you! I know you will do great on this program. I have met lots of people in the medical profession who are on this program. You have no reason to feel embarrassed. Doctors are human too. :-P

Welcome and congrats on taking that very important first step. I agree, no need to beat yourself up over how you got where you are (although that is MUCH easier SAID than DONE...because I have done it to myself too!) but you have the right attitude by looking FORWARD, not back.

I lost about 85lbs on Medifast about 7 years ago and never did I have any saggy skin. Take a look at Nancy P's pictures over in the Studio forum, she lost 130lbs and has posted pictures of herself in BATHING SUITS :ukulele: and she sure doesn't look "saggy" to me.

I think there is something different about MF than weight-loss surgery. Not sure what it is, but depending on how much you want to lose, you may not have any saggy skin. I certainly wouldn't worry about right now. Focus on the fact that you are turning over a new leaf, and worry about the small details later!

Start out drinking that water and never stop!!! :water:

I refuse to call you TUBBY  so I'm going to call you Kanobie! :D Welcome.........and are you a man or a woman? I don't have much to add other than do you have a health advisor from Make Me Thinner Take Shape for Life? They can answer so many specific questions about your body and what is happening and what WILL happen. I did the program 15 years ago under a doctor's strict supervision (it was ONLY liquid back then) and lost 35lbs, and now my doctor is monitoring me every other month. I am a type II diabetic and have been completely off of ALL medications since the 2nd week!! I was headed to insulin with one more point higher on my Hemoglobin A1C! Congratulations on your choice to practice what I'm sure you preach :D Being healthy is the greatest gift we are ALL giving ourselves here. Welcome and have a BLAST finding the real you!

Christi..........can't agree with you more...... :yeah: .....
Kanobie...... :wavie: ....Welcome.........and remember ....your profession may be a physician.............but first you are human..... .......life happens to all of us regardless of our knowledge...............give yourself credit for making the right decision..... :yeah: .....to take control of your life.........and about sagging skin......... .........I wouldn't worry about that yet...... :hmmm: ...however if it ever did happen.........I know I would rather be thin ...healthy ...and have saggy skin (which can be corrected) ....rather than be overweight.....unhealthy..........and firmer skin?????...just a thought..... ...much success to you on your journey......

Dear dear Kanobie -

The door is open and we welcome you to our great community that is getting bigger as more people get smaller.

We all got here in the same way - we didn't know how to establish a good meal plan and then stick to it but this is the training ground. We're all on a level playing field here. We need help, we recognize it and we learn the lessons that will lead to improved health, self-esteem and an appropriate weight.

Kanobie, many people ask me about saggy skin. There are a lot of posts about this topic - just do a little search and you'll find 'em.

Many people pat me down and check me out and ask me where my skin went.

It firms up as time goes by.

:secret: Saggy is better than flabby any day!

At 56.75 years old, I'm not as firm as I was when I was 25 years old but I am 75 pounds lighter. The parts that people  see look really good.

Welcome Kanobie

Dear Kanobie,

Welcome to the forum and a great tool for weight loss. I feel your pain as a physician, you just know everyone is thinking "shouldn't he know better?" My PhD is in a medical-related field and I've done research on the epidemic of obesity in Polynesia. Giving lectures on this always makes me uncomfortable b/c I just know that people are thinking, "So, if she knows all about this, and the risks of diabetes with obesity, why doesn't she do anything about it?" Very few of my colleagues are overweight, much less obese, and it's a sad fact that advancement is difficult when you are really fat -- even when it has no apparent impact on your job performance.

I agree that looking forward instead of back is better, but for me I think that the weight won't stay off until I understand that why I gained so much weight is not simply because I ate more calories than I could burn off. Your advice to not dwell on the past is great -- reflecting is good, wallowing is bad!
