Many thanks to Mike for locating this letter and kudos to Unca for posting it.

Like you, we are concerned about the quality, purity and safety of the foods we eat and the foods we give to our children, parents, and friends.
Medifast has provided pharmaceutical grade food for over 26 years and meets the strict standards of the FDA, many of its products are Kosher and others carry the GRI seal for approval for diabetics.

I do not wish to make light of your inquiries; I eat Medifast food products myself.

It is ironic that my DH and I are careful now about what we eat and what we feed to our grandchildren and aging parents when for most of our lives, we ate high calorie, trans fatty acids, high fat, sugar-laden foods with plenty of food coloring, preservatives, msg, and sodium with little nutritive value. As a result of incorporating the TSFL program, Medifast products and the BeSlim philosophy into our lifestyle, my husband and I have eaten more vegetables, fish, and fruit in the last 5 years than we did in the previous 54 years!

Thanks folks! So Solae truly does make the soy that goes in Medifast products then? I saw Mike's post but he said he wasn't sure.

I feel much better. :)

Not to be a pest, here, but if indeed Solae does make all the soy protein in MF products, and if that is safe, that still leaves the corn and wheat gluten in the stew, the chili, and some of the soups sitting in my cupboard. Forgive me, but my cat DIED from eating a contaminated premium food (verified by necropsy) that was recalled, two days AFTER his death. Given that I eat MF products 5 times a day, every day, that's a lot of whatever is in them.

I notice the official MF board has still not provided any answers, other than the one already quoted here about no pork products, although at least one other query (not from me) has been posted there.

As the recall expands and more and more products are found to be affected, especially with the recent discovery of introduction, although indirect, into the human food supply, it surprises me that MF has said so little officially. In the cases of the chicken, the pork, and the pet food, the proverbial barn door was locked only after the horse was stolen, i.e., the food had already been eaten and whatever damage was already done.

An official statement from MF itself would go a long way toward reassuring its customers.

Oh crap.. I eat the stew almost every day and recently ordered 2 more boxes of it. I am going to try to call them directly and ask them about it right now.

Sue, I am SO sorry you lost your pet. :( That has to be horrible. My kitty is my best friend...

Well I called Nutrition Support personally and the fellow I spoke with said that they don't know yet, but are still looking into it. I asked if there would be something posted when they do find out and he was non-commital. :( He said he "assumed" they would. That's nothing concrete.

I got an email today, he said it a little funny but I read it to say that all the products Medifast uses originate in the US. Yay! Phew! :) Now I hope this debacle is over with and they don't find any more tainted food anywhere.

Hello Tonia,

We were informed today by the Product Development Department that all of the products used by Medifast that the FDA is investigating or has found to contain melamine originate in the U.S. – not China. An “official” statement is forthcoming.

Thanks!

Chris

I think Elizabeth was referring to the e-mail, not the signature.

The products that are under investigation are those that contain melamine... which, the FDA has found to be imported into the US from China.
What this says is that Medifast uses none of these products, which given the high scrutiny with which Medifast products are held.... I would say that you can expect Medifast products to not be dangerous in any way.

So, no worries.
