Forced cheating!

Postby ascicles » August 18th, 2006, 8:40 pm

Well, my town is under a "boil order" because the water supply has been contaminated. At this time, they are telling us to only use boiled water until Monday. I don't trust myself to correctly boil the water to make it safe, so I am going to "cheat" to avoid it. I am going to try my best to simply eat well-balanced meals for the next few days.

Hopefully by Monday, I can get back on track.

What about just using bottled water?

Unfortunately, with a town of 100,000 people all without water, bottled water is extremely hard to find. The only bottled water I have been lucky enough to find is flavored. I've done my best, but honestly, one day of cheating (while eating balanced meals) isn't going to kill me.

I have some water to use now, until the boiled water restriction is lifted, thanks to a friend who lives in a nearby town.

This is one of the most annoying things ever. It's not like I'm happily cheating, none of the restaurants in town are open because of the restrictions.

Hi Manly, it is great that you are trying to make the best out of a lousy situation--good for you! On program or off program, makes us think about how important resources, such as water, are. Here in Florida, I have never trusted the tap water down here, but if I were using it, I wouldn't trust myself, to boil it properly, either. And, if a hurricane is predicted, bottled water flies off the shelves! Good luck in making it to Monday. ;)

The crisis is over. The soccer moms in their hummers can finally breathe again*.

*I live in the richest area of the state, and the people in this town were acting as though we were suffering through a natural disaster. It was kind of hilarious.

Well, it IS a pretty big inconvenience, even if it's just a day or two, especially if you have kids. But yeah, it's not like it's a hurricane or tsunami or something.

Ever since the Northridge earthquake (I grew up there, and my mom still lived there when it happened), I've kept a major supply of bottled water around just in case. Enough for me AND the dogs to get by for at least a few days.

We always keep a couple of cases of bottles in the basement. it's only $5 a case at Costco. We rotate them so they'er always fairly new too. Just in case of some weird water thing happens.

Manly,

That's always a tough situation to go through. I'm sure even off plan you came through with flying colors. I try to keep enough non-perishable food, water and resources available for at least 72 hours (3 days) just in case of emergency.

I've lost all of the extra weight, plus four more pounds though...so it's all good.
