Salmon

Postby MISSANNE » October 16th, 2006, 6:57 pm

I did a search in this section for salmon and there's lots of talk about how much to eat , smoking it etc but nothing really about just cooking it.

I'm not much of a cook so I was wondering if someone can give me a suggestion on how they cook theirs. On the grill, in the oven, seasonings, etc. I'm clueless even on how long to cook it.

Any help would be great.

I hate salmon, so I never cook it, but a good place to start might be salmonrecipes dot net. They cover the basics plus have almost 800 recipes, it looks like. You can grill it, bake it, steam it, etc.

If you want to go really basic, I'd sprinkle some lemon-pepper or Old Bay on it and grill it. I believe it's about 5 minutes each side, till it flakes easily with a fork.

I usually drizzle some ICBINB spray on top, and then add some dill weed and lotsa chopped garlic on top. Then I broil it for about 20-30 minutes or until the inside is light pink.

I use a little blackened seasoning, not too much, and grill it....but not too long - Just a few minutes on each side. One of my favorites!

Eeeew! I made salmon on the George Foreman once. My house smelled like fish for a month and we had to throw the grill out!

I do cook, and I always get asked for my recipe by salmon lovers, so here it is....

you need
Large piece of foil
Lemon slices
1 red onion
salmon
mustard (I use the spicy)

Put the salmon on the foil. Spread mustard on it. Place sliced onions and lemons on the salmon. Wrap the foil into a package and BBQ for 10-12 min (or longer if you like it well done), turning once. It will steam and grill at the same time. Yummy.

We have a nifty thing called a vertical grill (its basically a toaster for meat). I score the salmon and sprinkle fresh garlic and maybe a little teriyaki and then pop it in the vertical grill for 15 min or so. Comes out perfect.
The other way is baking it in a casserole dish after lettling it marinate in some lemon with fresh garlic. Yumm!

I grill the salmon on the Foreman grill and then sprinkle True Lemon and McCormick's Hot Shot on the fish after cooking. It's great!

As far as a fish smell, I must be buying the freshest salmon there is, as there is no 'fish smell' to the house, afterward. Fish should not smell if it is very fresh. ;)

Sounds like you got your hands on some bad salmon! It shouldn't smell fishy at all when you're cooking it (nor before, nor really afterward). If fish smells fishy, get rid of it!

I will cook any & all fish on the George. George has a permanent home on my back deck: no inside coking, no food smells! But the neighbors do lick their lips
