Lean Meal?

Postby MISSANNE » May 1st, 2006, 4:45 pm

Any thoughts on a chicken breast from a fast food place as being my lean?
I have done that many times before MF . Example: Jack in the box....I order just the grilled breast fillet. Think it has too much fat? Or OK? If its ok, that would work perfect for me.To get their side salad(take off the carrots and cheese) use MF dressing, and eat the chicken breast.
Theres my L/G!

Any thoughts?

You may want to check the company web site for nutrition information. If it's in the window, I would think it's good to go.

Hi Missanne,

I just looked up Jack in the Box grilled chicken fillet sandwich.

It contains 430 calories, total fat 20 gm, cholesterol 65, and sodium 1070mg. Carb count is 38 gms. This is not a good choice for your lean meat in the L&G. Hope this helps.

Wow, thats a lot of fat! Thank you!

I looked up Burger Kings, it is as follows:

150 calories, 4 grams fat, and less than 1 carb.

Thats not bad, right?
The side salad has 15 calories and 2 carbs. Carbs have to be from the ???? I took the cucumbers, etc off. They have that option.

Is the Jack in the Box for the whole sandwich or just the chicken breast?

I would say just be careful. I looked it up once and found that McDonalds cook their chicken breast in margarine but I know that BK flame broils so I would think that would be the better option of the two.

Those numbers are for the whole sandwich, which includes the bread and sauce and everything. A lot of sites let you leave stuff off and check the nutritionals again, so you might try that.

Just looked at their site and they won't let you do that. But I saw the list of ingredients in the chicken sandwiches and they include cheese and mayo and even bacon on some. And some are fried chicken, so obviously those wouldn't work. The chicken pita has only 3.5 grams of fat, so it sounds like the grilled or roasted chicken itself is probably fine.

The BK web site lets you remove everything....those # s I posted are for the breast only. I think I'll try to stick to cooking it at home.......but in a pinch, I'll go for Bk over Mickey D's or JITB

Thanks all

A lot of times the marinade has not so great things in it...sugar, usually. But, if it is plain grilled chicken it should be fine. All of my knowledge comes from Supersize Me  , so take none at face value. I have no time now to research..sad I know

Sorry, I meant Joan's numbers. The ones you posted from BK look OK, depending on the serving size.

I think that now that I'm FINALLY committed, I don't want to get of track. It won't be worth it if I screw up with as bad as I'm struggling already.

I cooked chicken breast on my George Foreman grill last night...not bad

I'm with you, fast food is so easy to get off track with the unknowns...

It is too bad they took away the essential one chicken and beef patties, they weren't the best, but worked in a pinch.

Dogma, I clearly stated that it was for a sandwich, not a piece of meat, primarily to use, only as a reference point. I, too, was unable to find listings for individual ingredients. Obviously, I did not make myself clear. Sorry. Personally, I still would not have the piece of meat, unless the company could assure me that they have not grilled the piece of meat in any medium, such as oil, margarine and the like, nor brushed anything on it prior to placing it on the grill. Just wanted to clarify where I was coming from.

Missanne, it takes less than 8 minutes to grill a chicken breast on a Foreman grill and so glad to hear that you have one! Brushed with some Walden Farms Hickory Smoked BBQ sauce, it is quite good. The grill is great for fish of all kinds, and steaks. Sometimes, I precook the chicken breasts the night before, refrigerate them, and the next day, make a salad, cut up the chicken and wa-la, a TAKE OUT 'chef's' salad! I am sure that many other members here, have better recipes for the Foreman grill. Sure makes meals a lot quicker and easier and there is no doubt whatsoever, what you are eating!! Best of luck to you, Missanne, always

Ya know, that kind of ticks me off!!! :x Why would fast food places marinate or cook their chicken breast in fat, margarine, etc? That is clearly supposed to be the healthiest choice! I feel as though thats tricky of them.
Now that I researched it more, you are right...most of them do.

That's sooooooo wrong to promote them as healthy. I just found the fat and calories in one of McDonalds salads! HOLY SCHMOLEY!

I won't eat one of those anytime soon.

They don't do it to make it unhealthy, they simply do it because it tastes better, therefore people buy it more. It all comes down to the $$$. Our bodies LOVE fat and sugar, we are designed that way.
