Horchata is kind of a milky looking sweet drink (with no milk). The milky look comes from I believe the fact that its made with rice. Its rice or rice flour, almond flavor with cinnamon and a little lime (and sugar of course). I would love to try the CLIGHT horchata if it tastes like the real thing.

 LOL LOL Yes, Mike.

If you want some of mine, I can share (not sell). You and Di pm me your address and I can send you a few of the horchatas and we will wait for your verdict.

I'm prolly the only Mexican on the planet that doesn't like horchata. Well, I didn't like it as a kid anyway, and that was the last time I tried it. The watery milkiness was aversive to me, but that was when I still drank whole milk! Now, whole milk is SO thick it's like drinking paint or Wite-Out!! So maybe I'll give horchata a try one of these days. Hmmm. I'm still never gonna' eat nopalitos, though. Unless I'm starving. And in the desert. Maybe then.

I can understand your reluctance. The first time I had it was about 4 years ago when a co-worker all but forced it down my throat. I love it but sometimes I can't take it because of my texture/look phobia. ;)

Oh man! Now I am really curious. I wonder if it taste like "tapioca milk." As a kid in south america they would give us tapioca liquid - boil the pearls in milk and then give us kids the liquid to fatten us (in my case it worked - that plus all that yucca!  )

My father was from Mexico City and my grandmother still lives there half the time and I had NEVER heard of horchata until my sister married a Salvadoran. I grew up in Texas too! I guess they just didn't like it so they never gave me any.

ok. for the record, the clight horchata does not taste like horchata... maybe like half-assed cinnamon rice water.

if you really jones, klass makes unsweetened packets of traditional latino drinks. they are not non-caloric, but they are low enough in calories that you can probably get away with a glass or so every once in a while.

melon, sandia, jamaica y tamarindo are all very good. the horchata is, again, like half-assed cinna-rice-water. they are everywhere, but the easiest place to get stuff like clight and klass drinks is gigante or the equivalent.

Clight

Postby Seaside » February 1st, 2007, 11:45 am

I got my packets yesterday and already tried the pina colada and fresa silvestre (strawberry). The pina colada is good -- tastes like pineapple with a bit of coconut and the strawberry is GREAT. I ordered more today and asked for guanabana and guayaba in particular, but also peach-jasmine, horchata, watermelon and mandarine.

Yipes! In fact, I like them so much that I have to go to the ladies room -- again!

I received the pine-orange and the pina colado. I tried the pine orange today - it tastes fine. Going to try pina tomorrow. Waiting for the more exotic flavors.

Thank you for the great flavor suggestions and for whetting our taste buds for tropical flavors. When I was teaching in San Antonio in the summers of 1990 and 1991, I used to buy Pink Grapefruit flavor Crystal Light. I loved it so and could not find it here in the northwest. I believe I also had the orange pineapple flavor.

Blech! A tapioca-less tapie drink does sound gross :puke:
