Getting Rid of "lumps"?

Postby StrivingSister » February 20th, 2006, 5:19 am

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to get rid of lumps in the hot cocoa (and probably the other hot drinks)? I don't have a microwave so I had to heat it it on the stovetop. I follwed the directions as closely as possible and stirred, stirred stirred, but to no avail. I liked the flavor, but with almost every sip, there were lumps!

Is it possible that the lumps are a result of cooking it on the stove? Maybe I will try a very low flame? Is there a problem with adding the hot water and stirring in the cup without microwaving/ "heating on stove?

Any advice would be appreciated. I would hate to have to seive the lumpy cocoa and potentially lose some of my flavor!!

Thanks!

sister- I use a wisk at first to mix well and then I heat very slowly on the stove top and that seems to get rid of the lumps just fine! Hope this works for you.

Yep, a wisk works wonders...also, you could blend it in the blender first and that also smoothes it out :)

I shake mine in a shaker jar before heating. Comes out lump free every time!

I use the Blender Bottle (search if you're interested). Lump-free, plus you get a nice bit of foam on the top.

Lumps

Postby Jan » February 23rd, 2006, 8:35 pm

I don't like lumps either. I put about 1" of cold water in the bottom of my cup, then add the mixture. I then stir and stir til it's smooth. Next I add about 1" of hot water and stir some more. Then top it off with hot water. Robin has me hooked on toasted marshmallow syrup-- sugar free of course. It is sooooo yummmmy so I add some of that too. I make all the hot drinks this way. No lumps for me!!

Following others' advice, making a paste with very little water first has solved most of my lumpy problems - soups and drinks.

no lumps with a blender bottle (cold water) then I split it up in two to nuke it so it doesn't overflow. I have also been known to pour my shakes and cocoa through a strainer.

I was noticing lumps in almost all of my stuff. I always used about 7oz. of water, since the packets say 6-8 is what we should use. I've found over the past few days that the lumps are completely gone if I use the full 8oz.

I use 8oz in all my drinks. I always use cold water from the fridge and whisk well, then nuke in the micro. Works for me!

Thanks, Unca, for the redirect to Nancy's post on the BottleBlender.

I wonder if we can buy just the whisker ball thingies. :scratchhead:
That little device just about solves the physics of the whole lumpage issue.

Shaking the hot stuff: I know it says not to, but it's just that it can be a mess. Extra energy added results in extra air which results in pressure which when relieved suddenly... Personally, sans blender, I shake.

I've got a couple of shakers that look like overgrown juice boxes (2c capacity, by Rubbermaid perhaps). When I DO NOT put the straw in them, I can shake hot stuff, then pop the top to let off the pressure.

Did this once with the straw in, but forgot to unscrew it slightly to relieve the pressure; I instinctively popped the top like usual. Because the only escape route from the shaker box was submerged, the LIQUID was forced out. Had myself a little Cream o' Broccoli fountain.

I was less upset about the mess than I was the waste of calories -- my, how priorities can change!

Wait. We aren't supposed to shake the hot drinks? I have been shaking mine since I started the plan, and I've yet to have a problem with them.
