French Onion Soup

Yikes! My work friends want to eat lunch at one of the local Philly pubs.

You know all they will have are fattening greasy foods. Do you guys think that if I get a large French Onion soup with cheese minus the bread, it can count as a mini- L&G? Then I can halve my dinner tonight?

HELP! and HURRY! We leave in 30 minutes!

I wouldn't advise it. Not the cheese, and who knows how much sodium and other stuff is in the soup (maybe somebody more knowledgeable will come along). Is there anything right next door that you could go get a salad at and bring in to be with your friends ?

Can you bring a supp along ? An RTD, a bar ?

It's this kind of stuff that one has to decide upon. Being with the buds this once and possibly ruining some good efforts you have put in thus far, or sticking with what you are doing and what you ultimately want. I would say if the circumstances aren't conducive for what you are doing right now, opt out.

Ok.... I am back.

I ordered the soup with no cheese and no bread. And then barely had any onions. I woould rather risk a slight sodium overload than going out of ketosis.

I hope it was Lipton's instant French onion because otherwise one of the main ingredients was butter. That's what makes authentic French Onion Soup so tasty and gives it body.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't tell me that.

Just when I thought I did ok by having a measly 3 ounces of french onion soup. It's amazing how easy it is to slip up on this program. At least on WW I could have had some pizza!

French onion soup is basically beef stock, onions carmelized in the butter and some kind of booze cooked together. I love it. I felt so chic eating it in Paris. But that's how you make it. Sorry. You only ate a little...

That's the kind of thing I am afraid of. Almost all resturants use this stuff in *everything* unless it's a specialty resturant for health nuts.

Yeah, just look at the nutritional info on the various cans of regular Campbells. Its loaded with fat. Usually the restaurant versions of soups are even worse.
I looked one version up... here is the info:

INGREDIENTS

* 1/4 cup butter
* 3 onions, thinly sliced
* 1 teaspoon white sugar
* 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
* 2 1/2 cups water
* 1/2 cup red wine
* 2 (10.5 ounce) cans condensed beef broth
* 1 French baguette
* 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese

Original recipe yield:
4 servings

NUTRITION INFORMATION

Servings Per Recipe: 4

Amount Per Serving

Calories: 707

* Total Fat: 30.6g
* Cholesterol: 89mg
* Sodium: 2031mg
* Total Carbs: 72.2g
* Dietary Fiber: 4.9g
* Protein: 31g

Mind you you didn't have the bread or cheese, so the carbs would be lower, as well as some of the fat from no cheese.

I would just advise to be careful about going out. Salads are typically much safer than soups (not that I don't have a small cup every once in a while myself). If you are trying to stick to the plan closely though, I would say no restaurant soup.

YIKES!!!

Thank goodness I didn't opt to add the provolone cheese and count it as an L&G!!!

So Mike- if I only had about 3 oz of soup with some onions, minus the bread and cheese- you think I did major damage? Will butter kick me out of ketosis? Probably not, right?

What I have found, personally, is that sugar is the major kicker. Fat can also kick you out, but the fat content in 3 oz probably isn't going to knock you out by itself. Just try to have as little fat the rest of the day and you should be okay.

Fat does not kick you out of ketosis (ask any Atkins dieter, who's far deeper in ketosis than a Medifaster). Only carbs can do that.

you did fine. really. fat is not ideal, but no sugar means no additional cravings to deal with. a good way to judge soup is let it sit there for a few minutes. if you see oil on the top, it's not a "clean" broth and probably doesn't work for our ass-ectomy purposes.

on the other hand, you watched other people eating what probably smelled good and used restrain and the best judgment you could. thumbs up.

What about the corn starch or flour, wine, brandy or sherry that was used? I'm sure that all in all it was not a big deal. Just a learning experience.
