What should my goal be?

Postby Brandigirl » December 27th, 2006, 7:39 pm

Hi everyone!
I am new to MF and was wondering how to set a realistic goal. I am currently 5'10" and #230. I would love to be 140 or 150 but I have never been that small and don't know if it's possible. That would put me losing #80 or #90 Is this realistic?

I think losing that amount is surely possible, but whether you should go that low or not depends on a lot of factors in my opinion.

I am 5'4" and my goal is only 140, because I've been that weight before and I know to go much smaller on my frame wouldn't feel right. I hope to be in a lot better shape at that 140 than I was the last time I was there, and my goal might change as I get closer, but that's my story anyway.

Have you checked your BMI (body mass index) and gotten a goal from there? Or is there a weight you've been at before where you were pleased?

Just "weighing in" - take me with a grain of salt, I haven't even started the program yet, but I just wanted to recommend you not pick an arbitrary number and maybe instead pick a goal of feeling/looking better or doing something you can't do now fitness-wise or something else, until you know more what a good "number" for you would be.

And of course - welcome, and good luck! This is a great forum and everyone I've met so far has been supportive and kind. Hope this helped.

Hi

It's all relative to a bunch of things. I'm nearly 5'10 myself and looked at the BMI chart and set my goal in the middle of it. I initially set my goal weight at 160, but as I got there, I realized for me (being extremely small-boned), I realized I should be about 148-150.

I agree with Nickieluv, set a goal where you were maybe comfortable before. If you were never where you were comfortable as an adult, right smack in the middle of the healthy BMI range is where I personally picked.

The Healthy BMI range for 5'10 is 130-170. I was 138 when I graduated HS and I was really really thin. I'm around 175 now and I'm still chubby. Several of us have adjusted our goals as we goal along. A goal is not set in stone. My main goal is to look and feel healthy.

I also set mini-goals, to help with my progress. It's all good. Hope this helps!

Yea, what they said... lol
What I would also suggest is to have an initial goal that you know is something you can look forward to. My initial goal puts me at about 240, which is still not where I should be according to the charts, but when I get there, I will decide where to go from there.
Choose small goals to reach along your path, and it will lead you to your overall goal.
As to whether your ultimate goal is at a good place, what Dede and Nickie said are both perfectly valid.
Good luck.

Hi BrandiGirl and welcome,
Healthy BMI numbers would be between 140/175ish.

You might shoot for the top end of 175, then see how you look and feel and go from there.

Enjoy the forum.....:)

My goal weight is (really) 125 but I have it now at 135 by the 4th of July. I am 5'7". I set mini-goals along the way like #20 club by Sunday, Onderland by Valentines Day. Any of these may change but goal-setting is a great tool.
