Uncommon Foods

Postby Sarya » June 28th, 2006, 12:56 pm

So tell me.. what are some of the foods you eat that are less common amongst the general population? Have you been able to find a way to continue to enjoy these foods while doing MediFast? What do you like about those foods? Maybe we'll all find new things to try!

---

One of my favorite cuisines is indian. The problem with curries is that they're saucy, and we all know sauces are hard to make compliant in Medifast. What I do some days is rub a fresh curry or biryani paste on my chicken then grill it. It gives me a little bit of that yummy flavor without adding any coconut milk, yogurt, and other stuff that make the sauce so creamy.

I really like mexican foods. I have had taco salad (of sorts) since I started MF and I mix salsa into my tomato soup.

How funny Elmogirl....I never liked Shrimp either, now I can't get enough of it!

I have tried so many new veggies...like Fennil and turnips. I find that I have to add new veggies so that I don't get bored.

Kabobs are a favorite too...and can still make those...with a little merinade...

I come from an Indian background. So, most of my recipes are indian based.

I think Tandoori chicken (ofcourse with boneless, skinless chicken breast) will qualify for a lean. I just skip the yogurt part out and use just the Tandoori spices.

For greens, I usually stir-fry "OK" veggies with 1 tsp of olive oil/Pam....at the end, I add some salt, curry powder. It tastes pretty good.

I love Indian, but don't eat it much. My favorite is Greek and Middle Eastern, so I use a lot of lemon-rosemary-garlic mixtures to marinate. I also had some Greek salads a few weeks ago with grilled, marinated chicken and low-fat feta.

My Mexican dinners now are chicken fajitas with onions and peppers, minus the flour taco. If I am really feeling daring I will allow a small dollop of guacamole. YUM.

Robin, I've really wanted to make some nice greek grilled chicken, but all of the greek seasonings I am finding have mint in them!! any thoughts? I swear my chicken never tasted minty in the restaurants.

My favorites that I am missing right now are tabbouleh, hummus, grape leaves and a nice big authentic gyros with tzatziki sauce. Some feta chese and calamata olives would also be nice as well.

One day in future when I hit maintenance I will have to look at the meditteranean diets.

mmm gyro. I found low fat feta cheese here that I have an ounce or two of every once in a while. Not too often because it's not the best choice of lean, but it's so yummy!

Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern food...

Postby MermaidinBlack » June 28th, 2006, 5:07 pm

Dood. Middle Eastern food is my ultimate FAVE. I am in love with the several Persian and Moroccan restaurants here in town.

We're hitting a movie and dinner on Friday night and Himself suggested we go to the Food Court at the Maul so I can get the gyro salad from the Greek place; do you think this would be okay if I brought my own dressing? It's lettuce, tomato, cucumber and sliced gyro (lamb) meat on top of it. I'm pretty sure I can gauge 5 oz of it and bring my own dressing so I don't eat the tzatziki sauce. Would it be better just to get the chicken (I SO love gyro meat, though)?

Wild ~ I saw some grape leaves in the store the other day and I'm not familiar with them. How are they prepared and served?

Typically the stuffing is made up of rice, lamb, pine nuts and sometimes fresh mint or parsely. At least that is the concoction that use when I have made them in the past. These are typically served warm. I also make a cold version using rice, feta cheese, parsely, and fresh mint.

The leaf itself can be bought at a local grocery store and comes in a jar packed with brine water.

I am a big fan of Alladin's...They have fresh grape leaves. if you are near the Independence area there is an Alladin's by the Winking Lizard on Rockside and there is one out in Lakewood I believe. But obviously you will need to wait until you are on maintenance to try these ;)
