Peanut butter/PB2 questions

Postby jskm » November 11th, 2007, 1:02 pm

Okay. With the exception of my recent (unintentional) self sabotage due to an erroneous assumption I've been doing well following the rules. I'm actually very hard on myself compliance wise, I haven't even allowed snacks up to this point and am reluctant to do so for fear of slowed progress.

SO, I am about to get some PB2 in the mail, and I have a recipe that calls for some peanut butter. After my stupid mistake (see above and/or my journal) I decided I wanted to see it in black white exactly WHAT and HOW much of both of these things are or are not allowed, and in what context. So I went looking and I can't find either one of them listed anywhere on any of the official MF lists.

So can someone with some formal knowlege of MF please give me the final word on what's legal or not for both of these two items? Thank you.

Peanut butter is a big :?: , some say that we are allowed 1 TBSP a day as a snack others say no. Before I got my PB2 I allowed myself 1 TBSP of LOW FAT Peanut Butter (I think it was like 9 grams or something) a day and it didn't seem to hurt, but that doesn't mean that it was OK. It is my understanding that we are allowed 2 TBSP of the PB2 a day. What I haven't figured out is if that is before or after it is mixed because 2 TBSP before mixing is only about 1 after mixing. So far I have limited it to just 2 TBSP dry.

Mike will probably want to "weigh in" on this one. He is the one that cautioned me about my addiction to the butter of the peanut.

Ok, I got impatient and started looking at the medifast dot com nutrition support forums and the dieticians there say that 1 level Tbsp of peanut butter is allowed as an occasional snack, but it's not recommended as a regular thing, and it's only recommended if you are having trouble getting your full 800 calories in.

They say that 2 level Tbsp of PB2 are allowed as an occasional snack, but they don't say if that's dry or mixed.

Anyone?

PB2 is, in its designed state, to be made into a peanut butter paste. So the 2 Tbsp would be mixed up with water.

Lets just all keep things clear though..... according to the Quick Start Guide, you are allowed 1 (one) snack in addition to your 5+1. PB is not a condiment, its a snack.... so if you do use the PB, that's it.

It's great mixed into a shake, too. I don't use the Medifast ones anymore, but I would assume it would be just as tasty as it is in the protein shakes I drink these days. And if you add a squirt of sugar-free banana syrup ... sigh.

OK. So what I do sometimes is use 1 mixed up TBSP of PB2 on 1 full stalk of celery. Since we are allowed 3 stalks and 2 TBSP PB2 I should be within the plan.

I KNOW IT ISN'T a good idea to tweak the plan and I am NOT recommending it, that is just what I do.

I also add some PB2 to choc and banana shakes and puddings. YUMMY!

Thanks Mike for the clarification. Now I know where I stand heading out the gate before the stuff even gets here.

All of this reminds me ... I'm on my last jar (I gave one away), so I should probably reorder soon. I've been using it a lot in shakes lately.

Can someone explain what PB2 is? If it's what it sounds like, it would be pretty cool to have. Although without bread or anything to put it on...it may be tough.

PB2 is the "powder" that is left over when all the oil has been presse out of peanuts. It is great to add the powder to shakes and puddings for something different. It is also good to put on your celery for a snack too.

I have 2 brand new jars of it that I am not going to use as fast as I thought I would. I will sell or trade them if anyone is interested.
