Ketosis question

Postby jayzoe » January 14th, 2008, 12:47 pm

What will bump you out of ketosis?

I ask because I had a small bite of chocolate chip cookie yesterday   so did that knock me outta ketosis or does it take more than that? A whole piece of bread? An M&M? :D

Technically, a crouton COULD kick you out of ketosis, but in reality it is different for everyone. I am able to add peanut butter to my daily plan and get away with it, but others cannot. Sugar and Carbs are the big culprits. Best thing to do is stick to the plan.

Well, the Quickstart quide says a few croutons can do it. It depends on how many carbs you had and how many you had already had and had after that. So, we really don't know. Generally to stay in ketosis, you are staying under 85 grams of carbs a day. A piece of bread-definitely a no-no.

It depends on you. For Di, there have been times when 1 tsp of non-dairy creamer did it, and for me, its taken more.

You will know though... the way Dr. A asks is... didd you put anything in your mouth that wasn't part of the plan. If so, you take the chance of being taken out, but it comes down to carbs.

Yeah, that's not entirely true. You can eat a big ol' rib-eye steak and that would not be on plan, but it wouldn't knock you out of ketosis. Not that I'm recommending that anyone eat that, of course. But only carbs will do it. Which is why Atkins folks are always in ketosis, no matter how much fat and protein they eat.

But otherwise, everyone has their own level. For some, even the 85 grams on the plan is too much to stay in ketosis (some of us who spent a long time on Atkins or other low-carb plans, for instance).

Usually Medifast won't put you in ketosis enough to register on the strips. You mostly just can tell by how you feel. If you're suddenly hungry and you weren't before, chances are you're not in ketosis anymore. But I wouldn't sweat stuff like that too much. Just stick to the program, stop eating bites of cookie or bread or whatever else, and you'll do fine. If you start trying to test how much you CAN cheat, you're going to go overboard and you're only cheating yourself.

The cookie's gone by now. I'd say just move on and don't beat yourself up over it, but also don't do it again.

Exactly what Robin said. Follow the program and don't sweat it. The extra carbs can keep you from burning fat.
