HELP! i need a cough drop!!!

Postby lifelovinaries » December 6th, 2007, 3:03 pm

I have developed a tickle in my throat over the past 3 days from post nasal drip. Anyhoo, it has started interrupting my sleep for the past 2 nights so yesterday, i went out and bought SF Halls (kiwi-apple). There is NO nutrition info on them but it does have exchange information: 1 drop=free exchange, 10 drops=1 fruit. Ok so since it didn't have the nutrition info and i have looked at SF candy before and some still have a lot of carbs, i decided to eat one ONLY if needed. Well last night i woke up about 2am and could not get back to sleep because of all of my coughing. So i pulled one out and ate it. Fell back asleep. Today at work, once again i coul not get thru a normal convo without coughing A LOT so i ate another one. It helped but can i tell you that i have now been craving sugar ALL DAY LONG????? I don't think this is a psychological thing because i really wasn't afraid of it making me crave sugars and carbs, i was more concerned with it throwing me outta ketosis (which i guess of course then i would crave sugars and carbs...silly me!) Does anyone know anything about these SF Halls or other cough drops? I am scared to take another one tonight but i also can't afford to stay up half the night.

Ok, found it online, 5 calories, 0 carbs from sugar, 0 grams of sugar, all per drop. So there would really be no logical reason for it to make me crave carbs and sugar. Kym, did you put some kinda spell on me cuz i laughed at u???? <img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_4_131.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D15%252F15_4_131/image.gif">

But seriously, has anyone else had this problem?

Man, if we ever got you guys together at a party... :roflmao: :roflmao: :yay:

As for the drops... I use SF Halls Cherry. They hace Ace-K and aspartame as the sweetener and also isomalt which is where the carbs come from. Sometimes aspartame does cause some folks to experience sugar cravings, but not at this level... cravings must be coming from elsewhere.

If you want to use a syrup, you can find ones specially formulated for diabetics so no carbs. That's what I had to do when I was sick.

I don't know if it's available in the States, but I use a syrup called Buckley's. It is absolutely revolting, they don't put in any sugar or flavorings.. it has menthol, camphor and some mix of herbal stuff.. it is literally the worst tasting thing I have ever experienced in my life.

But it stops the coughing. Not quite for as long as they advertise, but pretty close.

Haven't heard of buckleys but i can stomach swallowing just about anything (except olive oil). Luckily, i had very little coughing today even though it seems to get worse at night. Last night, i had started looking up info for SF cough syrups. I don't want to buy it yet because i so rarely get sick, it will probably go to waste. If i start with the coughing again tonight, i will run out and get some. That's definitely the route i will take next time. I have now developed cough-drop-aphobia. Hey mike, is that anywhere in the science books?

Ricola (sp?) has a SF cough drop, too. And then there's plain ol' water. The whole point is to get that swallow mechanism to work for ya.

dang nab it, the swallowing mechanism HAS to be working already. The funny thing is, when the tickle hits my throat, i take notice that my throat feels dry. HOW??? i drink upwards of 120oz of pure water a day. jeez, if i can be dehydrated after that, who knows? It seems to be more than enough to turn a prune back into a plum!!! Anyhoo, i keep water by my bedside to try and take small sips which seem to be a temporary fix (all of 10 mins) then i have to get up to go pee! Besides, if i drink too much overnight, i might mess up my scale whore activities for the a.m. Alas, maybe the nighttime coughing will burn a few extra calories!

Try some Sudafed -- if you can dry up the post-nasal-drip, maybe you won't have a cough?? I know that's what it is for me.

Gotta love those 2 and 4 a.m. potty runs!!! :D

Do you have asthma or, as some call it, reccurent bronchitis? I do, and when it gets cold and dry I get a cough like that. I use the generic Halls SF. I too drink over 120 oz of water a day. The sugar cravings might be your energy being zapped from the cough. I had a huge asthma attack the other day and was going through the same issues.

We do have Buckley's cough syrup in Colorado and I have seen it in Illinois too. I love the commercials!

Yes, i was diagnosed with asthma as a kid but my doctor (as an adult) changed the diagnosis to exercise induced asthma then when exercise stopped flaring it, the diagnosis was dismissed altogether. duh, i didn't even attribute it to that since my asthma rarely flares and i haven't used an inhaler in YEARS. So that might actually be it. i am not having that tight chest feeling but now that you mention it, i remember THE COUGH. At this point, who knows...it's not a cold, i have no other symptoms, i feel fine, just that little tickley throat thingy.
