Gilroy Garlic Festival

Postby mellowmom » July 21st, 2006, 9:53 am

Anyone planning on attending? It's next weekend...July 28 through the 30th. If you love Garlic, it's the PLACE to BE. (Also very tempting.) My oldest, who is also on Medifast said quote..."This is going to be the worst Garlic Festival ever!!" I reminded him that we probably could find something else to eat there besides our usual peppersteak or 40 clove garlic chickens sandwiches, calamari, shrimp scampi, ice cream, wine.... (he's right, this Will be the worst festival ever!!! ) <---Just kidding
Actually as I recall they have Louisiana crawfish and chicken or beef satay on a stick also there...so I think we'll do fine.

Also, of course, there is a karaoke contest. The pre-lims will be Friday at 1:00PM, and if you're one of the top 5 from there you get to perform in the Finals on Saturday. Being a glutton for punishment... ( better than the other type of glutton I used to be,) I'm going to try and get into the pre-lims. A local radio station has tryouts for a finalist spot on Saturday via phone auditions, but here's the catch, they limit it to ages 15-28! This is proof I'm way past the age demographic for karaoke...but better late than never, right?

Have a great weekend. It's going to be hot and HUMID!?!?!?!? here. It's NEVER HUMID here, so us poor Norte Californians won't know how to handle it.

Hi Mike,

okay...Monterey is a little less than an hour away from Gilroy. Any chance you can make it on Friday? It's way less crowded and also, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get a chance to sing on that day. The following day is for "finalists"...which I'm pretty sure I WON"T be making.... The gates open at 10:00AM. THe pre-lims start at 1:00PM.

How's the Solano County Fair going? Maybe next year I'll get a booth up at the Garlic Festival or the Mushroom Mardi Gras in neighboring Morgan Hill. (We're all such a bunc of "foodies" here in the South County. )

Hope you can make it. I live within walking distance of the shuttle buses to the Festival. (At least I think that now I can walk the distance...last year it was tough!)

Would love to meet the both of you in person.

This weekend (7/22-23) they are having a garlic festival in Murphys too. It's very close to Angel's Camp if you're familiar with the Mother Lode area.

I wish I could go. I still have my Gilroy Garlic Festival cookbook from YEARS ago.

And there's meat on a stick at every outdoor festival, isn't there? The "green" is the harder part, but there's gotta be a salad somewhere.

Boy I hope next weekend isn't as hot as today. I got in my car and the outside temperature read 108! Plus it was kind of muggy...Definitely not a good day to be "out" and about.

Michael and Diana, it would be great if we could get together at the Festival. If you want PM me your contact info, cell phone or whatever and I'll send you mine and we can try to coordinate this get together in real time.

We can't make the Murphys one, we are still here at the Solano County Fair all weekend.
As for meat on the stick.. yeah, there are chicken and beef sticks available (as well as corndogs... wish I could have one of those :x )
There are a couple of places here that have salads. One actually had a green salad (don't think it was even 2 cups) for $4.50. Another had the chicken stick with salad. We also got a half chicken with coleslaw.
So, its available, you just have to find it.

Thanks for the head's up about the green, Robin. Perhaps I'll throw together a baggie of raw veggies to supplement.

hmmmm....what if 1 1/2 c of roasted garlic count as a green?? (I know, I know...just dreaming)

Can't wait, Carmel!!!

Di,

A cup and a half of garlic! Wow...you really must LOVE garlic!

I looked it up and just a cup of the "stinking rose" has 243 calories and 45 carbs!!! -Who knew???

I know they have roasted garlic, (maybe on some multi grain MF crackers???) along with their more "classic" entrees like: Cajun crawdads, Garlic Gatortail or Wild Boar on a stick. And there is at least one vendor, I think it's Jay's Cafe, that offers "Fresh Vegetables with Garlic Sauce" (hope that's legal...sounds yummy)

Counting the days...

And if you had this, when would I return to the house?

Sounds fun Carmel. Gatortail sounds like an adventure. No frog legs?

Actually, yes, they do offer frogs legs, along with buffalo, and kangaroo on a stick! (Didn't mention it on the other post because I was trying to prevent the vegetarians on board from catching the "vapors.)
