FAKE FRENCH FRIES???????????

Questions/Comments about Weight loss Products.

Postby Pashta » April 5th, 2006, 4:06 pm

Ok I cut up one small-medium turnip tonight (it was less than the cup and a half we are supposed to have though, i think it was less than a cup even) into thin french fry looking pieces, sprayed regular Pam (don't have the olive oil one) on foil and put them on it, put some salt on them and baked em at 400 degrees for er.. 15 minutes or so? Well they didn't come out crispy unfortunately, but the taste was rather interesting, and they did remind me of slightly soggy fries. Maybe a different temperature would have worked better? :dunno:

My lean was those market day turkey steaks (0 carbs) so I stayed under the 300/10 limit.

Martin, why are turnips on the allowed veggie list if we can't have the full cup and a half? That is so weird.

BTW, turnips are also pretty good cooked like mashed potatoes. I used to use 'em a few different ways on occasion when I was on Atkins. They have a bit more bite than potatoes, but I liked 'em.

Good to see ya here Martin!

What you should do if you want to crisp them up is dip them in batter first! No- Just kidding, REALLY THOUGH! You should start them out on a lower temp to COOK THEM and then use your HIGHER TEMP to finish them and add your crisp. Move then every 2 minutes or so. and add your salt and seasoning during the crisping process. Just an idea...

how about cauliflower mashed potatoes?

Postby mini me » April 5th, 2006, 8:10 pm

steam cauliflower until it's soft and mash it up like you would potatoes. Add butter flavoring (d. burke's butter flavor spray -- 0 everything). And voila ... you've got mf legal "mashed potatoes"

Pashta, good catch. You would only need to limit yourself to that amount is you had that in addition to your salad. Sorry for any confusion.

Gillian, It was very nice to hear from you today! Take care.

Hmmmm
Before we get off and running tooo far, Remember that's 1 1/2 cups of cooked cauliflower and then mash it -- it will be less mashed. The same goes for the turnips if you decide to mash them . I remember once as a kid my mom fixed them -- even the cat who loved mashed potatoes wouldn't touch them -- even covered in gravy!! I am always a little leery of any oil -- lots of calories -- I don't have tooo many ideas of how to turn turnips into french fries other than to just keep experimenting. Let us all know if there's a great secret out there.

I tried the "turnip fries" last night. I cut them up really thin and sprayed them lightly with some Pam spray and added salt and pepper. They were wonderful! I was very leary at first but to me they were really close to french fries just a little sweeter almost like sweet potato fries!

I am so glad I have another turnip!

what temperature did you bake them and for how long? I am considering baking them at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes and then once baked, broil for a few more minutes so they are crispy. Since they shrink, I am adding a small onion to bake along side and a head of garlic! (the garlic will go on top of my chicken).

I baked them at about 400 for about 20min but they were not cripsy but definetlay close enough to the real thing. My family loved them too.

let me know if you get yours to crisp up so I can try it if it works

Just the Pam spray. I sprayed the pan first and then sprayed the "fries" lightly and put salt and pepper on them.

Try it I think you will like it.
