Body Fat Percentage

Postby Pashta » April 26th, 2007, 5:55 pm

Ok, something is bugging me big time. How many of you have scales with the body fat % on them? Well I do and mine has always said I am about 50% fat, +- 1 or 2 points. Excuse me? Is that right? It said that right after the baby when I still weighed 248 or something and it said that when I lost weight last year on Medifast when I was down to 210.

If that IS correct, why wouldn't it change? I really don't see myself as being HALF FAT. I do carry my weight mostly in my breasts and thighs/butt though. I read somewhere that those electrical currents only go through the lower half of your body. My BMI is supposedly around 37-38 according to the height/weight charts so where does 50% come from?

Is BMI and body fat percentage the same thing?

Someone please compare with me, does your scale say 50% fat too?

BMI and body fat are not the same, and the only reliable way to measure body fat is with a qualified professional. They have real reliable methods. That said, most scales are only moderately accurate on a small to medium percentage of people. I wouldn't hold much stock in that.

hey pashta...i don't think the scales are correct with their body fat %. Mine too, for years has said that I am approximately 50% body fat if i gained weight, it would increase a little. I also found that later in the day, it would decrease. Not by a little but by 10% or more. GO FIGURE!! I guess i became a lean muscle machine in the late afternoon. :weightlift: Transformed like a superhero or something. About two years ago, i bought a hand held fat analyzer and it seems to be MUCH MORE accurate. Well at least that is what i would like to believe. It normally says about 37% which, although high, it is much more comforting than 50%. It says my bmi is 34.9. You have to enter all of your info (age, gender, height, activity level, etc) It's made by Omron and sorry, I don't remember where I got it from nor do i remember the exact price but i wanna say around $40-$50. Hope this has helped a little.

Personally, I don't hold much stock in body fat analyzers. I would just stick with your BMI (unless you are a lean, mean, muscle machine). Although I still don't like what the BMI tells me I should be, I'm still shooting for less than 30. Me being 6'1" and 179 lbs will probably never happen, but me at 200 ish would be nice. ;)

I would If I had bought one to do that, but I really didn't care about it at the time I bought so didn't buy one to show it.

My scale only weighs......nothing else, and it only breaks the weight down into .5 increments. I feel cheated that I don't have a fancier scale after hearing about what some of them can do!

Back when I had a Tanita it was always the same - 48%. No matter what time of day, how much I weighed, it was always the same. Glad to know it's just the technology and maybe I'm really not half blubber!

I emailed the company and asked them, they replied with that it does only measure the resistance in the lower half of the body. It also said to keep your legs apart and lol.. my thighs are too big to hold them apart and stand on the scale at the same time. Maybe that's why. Oh well, wasted money, cause the regular digital scale that looked just as cool was only $40 and this one was $60. :(
