What to do with these thighs?

Postby armeewyf » May 4th, 2005, 8:31 pm

OK, week 3 is over...time to exercise. I know a lot of you recommend and do pilates and walk. I have been really checking myself out lately, looking for the weight loss and have decided I have GOT TO DO SOMETHING WITH THESE THIGHS! I mean, they are bad. Its like all the baby weight I lost all fell down to my thighs (I lost a ot of weight low carbing it after childbirth). They are huge, flabby and full of cellulite (maybe I should post a pic?)...and I have dared to have shorts on already this year. Really, I cannot stress how bad they look...HELP! I am not sure if I can say the name of the product here, but its by Suzanne Somers, was popular in the 80's and is new and improved and making a comeback (is that a big enough hint?) Think it will work? I am open to any and all suggestions! Especially if anyone has tried the product I am referring too...I may be panicking because I had a birthday this week that has taken me out of the thirty-something era  On second thought, no, it really is THAT bad! Thanks all! Lee Ann

Hi!
I think we can say thighmaster here...(anyone looking? ok).
And if that's teh route you want to go, I cant think of any reason why you shouldnt do that. To get rid of fat though (other than the fatmelting your doing with MF of course!) why not add some good old fashioned walking? The weather's getting nicer, and that'll tone your legs somewaht as well!

Thanks for the reply. I think I am still in shock over just how bad my thighs look! I only have one full length mirror in the house and until this weekend, it was mostly covered by my baby's crib. Now I can see ALL of me! I may invest in a Thighmaster (guess its ok to say that). I just wondered if it works? And yes, I am going to start walking. Walk Away the Pounds today as a matter of fact (1st day). I thought last night how nice it would be if I could take the loofa and some exfoliant and wash the sagging skin, cellulite and dimples away! Hi LeeAnn,

One thing to remember is that no matter WHAT the ads for various pieces of exercise equipment say, it is IMPOSSIBLE to isolate a particular area of the body for the purpose of burning fat. You CAN isolate an area for the purpose of building muscle.

When you work a particular muscle, it will grow...........When you exercise and your body needs additional energy by burning fat........it takes fat cells from your entire body, no matter where they are, to burn for energy (regardless of which muscle you are working) In other words, if you are working your thigh muscle, your body will get energy from fat in your stomach, arms, back, legs...........wherever it finds it!

Thigh muscles are the largest muscles we have. Any exercise involving these muscles are EXCELLENT because they will require more energy, and if it can't get this energy from our food intake (which is why Medifast works so well), it gets the energy (fuel) from stored fat reserves.

Briskly walking is a great way to use the thigh muscles to burn fat...... whether outside or on a treadmill. (outside is less boring......especially if you alter your route periodically)

The answer to your "thigh issue", is to simply stay on plan and when you are to the point that you are allowed to exercise, do cardio type things to get the heart rate up. If you can do this type of exercise first thing in the morning, you will benefit more. Studies show that getting your heart rate up first thing in the morning sets the tone for your body regarding the rate it will burn calories for the entire rest of the day.

When it is warm enough, and if you have access to a pool........swimming is a great way to burn calories. Even staying in one spot and simply "treading water" is an excellent way to tone your legs and arms as well as burn calories.......and where do these calories come from?...From Fat!!

Once the underlying fat starts to leave your entire body, including your thighs, you will get a better picture of where you stand. All those lumps you see are pockets of fat..........once you burn them off, you will see a nice difference.

It took time to get your thighs in the shape they are in, so it will take some time to get them back to where you want them. Be patient........don't get discouraged..........and you will be happy in the end.

Hi Lee Ann~~ You know, my whole life, yes......even when I was skinny........ I have had big thighs. Not as big as they are now, mind you..........but, when I was in high school I was a cheerleader........ all of the other girls had chicken legs :hatch: .............and they called me "THUNDER THIGHS".:lightening: (mean, huh?)........so I can totally relate to the big thigh problem.

I have been doing winsor pilates and actually ordered (just today) the Bun & Thigh workout. I also plan on walking quite a bit this summer. When I get to goal I am going to go back to weight training. :weightlift:

Don't worry too much about your thighs, I mean work on them, yes..........but worry NO. Just concentrate on getting to your goal weight and getting into shape. You are gonna look MARVELOUS DARLING!

Hi Lee Ann, I have been away on my Honeymoon!!!!! Lost almost 10 lbs while away!!!!! I can't believe how good I was. Well worth it !!!!

I too have always been heavier below the waist, even when I was much thinner. However, my body has changed. Now my thighs are smaller than my pant waist size!!!! I think that it is from my use of a recumbant (I'm not sure of the spelling) excersise bike. It is easier on my back and I feel that my whole leg(ham bone that it is) is being engaged as well as my buttock!!!! I read magazines, books, watch TV and BOOM the time flies by!!!!!! :boing: I really think that it reshapped my body. Good luck and WELCOME !!!!! :water:

LeeAnn
I can relate about the "thunder thighs"....I am shaped like an hour glass..and let me tell you...I will always have the hip/thigh curse..no matter how much I weigh!! I find that when I loose weight that I loose it mostly from the waist up FIRST...then the last few pounds come off from my lower back (that midriff yucky stuff!!) and my hips/thighs!! unfortunatley..your body will get to a certain fat percentage..before it starts melting off from your lower body...I have had many people tell me that!! and from what Ive experienced..its TRUE!! we cant change the way our bodies were built!! we are who we are...but what we can do is make ourselves look BETTER and do the best we can with what we have!! Deans post was RIGHT ON about "spot" reducing....overall fat loss is what to aim for....walking, cardio....just doing the thigh master wont help much...but doing cardio and strength training will help smooth out our thighs...build muscle and shed some fat!!! Although I am at goal...I too still struggle with cellulite and big thighs....my pants always have to be altered in the waist...cuz my upper body is so small..and my lower is bigger!! but as I said...this is how the lord built us!! we just do what we can about making the best of it!! if it helps you at all to know...Ive lost several inches off my hips/legs..and they are much more toned and less flabbage...but the cellulite seems to be less noticible...and Ill just keep working at it!! there is no magic cure for cellulite....not yet anyhow!!! we just have to work extra hard on our lower half's!!!!!

Everyone is givng me really good advise! I appreciate all the tips I can get. Dean does seem to be right on the money with his explanation. And I can see how a recumbent bike can help. ChickB I am built a lot like you described and drop the weight from my upper body just like that...I think it all slides down. I guess I just took TOO good a look at my legs and I was totally mortified (after all, its bathing suit and shorts season!). My knees look so tiny! I think I have spent the last 6 mos in sweats! I am going to do as Dean suggested and get to walking. Here in WV its been unusually cold. I have a Walk Away the pounds tape I had hoped to start yesterday but couldn't, so this weekend its a MUST. I will graduate to the treadmill and outside. And throw in some pilates later (maybe after June vacation).

Congrats on losing that 10 lbs while on your honeymoon! And congrats on your wedding!

Lee Ann,

Has it warmed up enough in WV to start walking outside yet?
In Chicago it is still quite cool, but a beautiful day for a walk. I was able to get a long one in today, then soak in the bathtub with a MF Cappuccino. I feel great!

Warmed up? yes. But raining...Mornings are cold and afternoons are very warm (near 90). Coldwave coming though--low 40's the next few nights. I planned to get my fannie in motion Walkin away the Pounds. It just didn't happen this week. Upcoming should be a lot easier and I should get in the exercise mode. Hope you enjoyed your tub! It sounds GOOD! I have about forgotten what a treat a long bath is since I now have an audience of a 2 year old! Lee Ann
