When I was stationed in England I got turned onto parsnips. Parsnips when roasted have a sweetish taste to them and they are yummy as well.

Parsnips would appear to be off-limits, though. They have three time the carb content of turnips (24 grams in one cup, as opposed to 8 grams for a cup of turnips).

Alright you guys this is way to funny. I had the same experiace with the checker not knowing what a turnip was. He looked at the checker over from him and they said ...I don't know what that is...just ask the lady...meaning me. I was rollin....
However I did get charged for them and had to pay for them. lol. Since then I have bought more and the older cashiers seem to know what they are.
Never in a million years did I think I would be in market for "some nice turnips" to funny...
We also tried them with some Cinnamon and Splenda....that I would not recommend. To much after taste.

Try them with Garlic Salt and EVOO...yummmo!

I tried this with zuchinni last night and it was great. I only made about 6-7 pieces, just because I wanted to test it out, but I could see myself making a full 1 1/2 cups of them soon.

Here is what I did...

- cut the zuchinni in small slices (not ultra thin though, or they will stick)
- "patted" in lite soy sauce on both sides
- sprinkled with garlic salt
- sprayed with butter flavor pam

I baked it for about 15 minutes at 375, and they were kind of limp. I think I will bake them at around 450 next time, which according to some similar recipes on the internet, will make them crispy.

I think that when I do them next time, I'm going to put the soy sauce and garlic salt in a large ziploc bag and shake everything up. That way everything should get decent coverage...and I wouldn't run the risk of using too much of the two sodium filled ingredients.

You know, they've got to have Ranch flavoring around here somewhere. Perhaps the dried ready-to-mix packets would work??

I have yet to try the turnip chips...they sound good tho. But, I just wanted to toss out there that I personally don't peel the turnips when I do turnip fries I just wash them and slice them up and cook'em. I can't tell any difference in peeled or unpeeled.

so, i've never had a turnip. i don't think i've ever even seen one! and my stove doesn't work, so i can't try these (although i'd really like to). despite all this, when i went to the store to get some dog food (cause at least she can still eat normally) I looked for turnips.
there were none.
the produce guy was there watering stuff, so i casually asked him where the turnips are.
he looked at me like i was mad and said, "why would anyone want one of those?"

I did it! I had a turnip for my L&G the other night, only I fixed it the way a friend told me to.

I stuck it in the microwave until it got soft (about 7 minutes in mine, but I kept checking after 4) Then I took a little slice off the top and scooped out the innerds. Sprayed a little cbinb spray, salt & pepper and ate it! It was actually not what I expected at all. I think I can get used to them and they do taste and look alot like potatoes.

I'm sold on turnips. I'm gonna try the chips this weekend.

Jo, see they weren't so scary after all! hehe I am going to have to try them that way. The only way I have made them is baked with garlic salt.

I guess I better go get me some that ICBINB Spray too!

I tried the turnip chips and could not get them to get crispy like a chip at all.
Two attempts, I sliced them very thin like a potatoe chip sprayed oil on them,salt and baked at 400 for 20 mins. they were very limp.
I thought I would bake a little longer on next batch but then they just burnt but were still limp when burnt.
How are you guys getting these things to get crisp?
If I could put time in a bottle, I'd drink it! ;)

k...I might have done this wrong, but I really didn't like them...maybe I just don't like turnips. I've never had them before.

I had 'em last night, too. Unpeeled, though, and some were sliced thicker than others because I got impatient. Most of 'em didn't get crisp, but I didn't care. Still loved 'em. I'm going to make my roasted mustard turnips either Wednesday or next week (recipe already posted).

Csula, do you have an oven? You don't actually need a stove to cook them.

I like to add them in with the zucchini, mushrooms and tomatoes when I make my dishes for the L&G. I use our handy Kitchen Craft Kitchen Kutter to julienne the zucchini and turnip and then saute the veggies with a little olive oil and garlic. Yummy addition with chicken or fish.
