Can we stir fry our meats and vegetables in a wok?

that, sounds great!! Hmmmm I would think if you use non stick spray (pam butter flavor mmm) and don't add any extra calories (e.g. butter, oils, nuts, noodles, etc.) it should be fine! Hmmm I think I'm gonna try that!!! Don't have a wok, but the electric skillet will just have to do! :)

I have a question tho...can we eat water chestnuts? They aren't on the list, but are on every "free food" list I've seen on every other program.

I think Water chestnuts would be fine tooo. But then remember I'm the one with "carrot on my face" :mrgreen: I stir fry with pam and veggies. Sometimes I add chicken or even a little pork. Spices things up a bit.

Hmmmm....In a previous post someone had asked if it was ok to use oil on their salad as dressing. The answer was that it was ok and 2 Tbsp. could be used....which I thought was a pretty darn generous amount. So, I have been using non-stick spray and a Tbsp. of olive oil to pan fry trout (since I was informed you should only have beef three days a week). Is this amount of oil ok....or is it a no no?

Well I emailed the nurse at medifast about cooking veggies in something like butter or oil and they said no.

Oh bummer! Back to the drawing board...first the beef let-down, now the fish. I shouldn't ask this question (ignorance has been bliss), but here goes.....I marinate my steak and chicken in a package mix that is made with olive oil to season and tenderize, then grill the meat. Is this acceptable?

I went back and found where I got the "using oil on salad info"....it was on the Medifast website.

"On 1/20/2006, Medifast in MD said...

To Kat in FL Yes you can use 1-2 tbsp of canola oil and vinegar to your salad. You can also use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter."


Do you think they made a mistake?

Here was my email to medifast:
I just received my first shipment of meals and the quick start quide. I had a question about the lean meat. Is there a limit to the amount of beef/pork/lamb per week? I know there is a 5 ounce limit per day but as an extreme example, could I have beef 7 days a week?

Salad dressing: It says any low fat and low carb dressing. That's kinda confusing because low carb usually isn't low fat. Are there any guidelines to look for (i.e. no more than xx gms of fat, no more than xx gms of carbs...).

Last question. Can the vegetables be cooked with butter or margarine or do they have to be plain (except for some spices maybe).

Here was the response I got:

Hi, I'm Amy, the Nutritionist at Medifast and was referred your email. I would recommend limiting the fatter meats (beef, pork, lamb) to no more than 3 times a week. This also includes 7 ounces of salmon. Many low-fat salad dressings are also low in fat. You are looking for a salad dressing that has 6 grams or less of carbohydrates in it for 2 tbsp. The following are types of salad dressings you can use, Carb Well or Walden Farms. I would not recommend using margarine or butter on the program, however you can use products such as Molly McButter, Smart Balance, or I can't believe its not Butter. I hope this helps answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. Have a great day!

Salmon

Is Salmon considered a Fatty meat? I have been eating it almost every day and I am on day 7 and have lost 9 pounds. Also, I use a spicy szechuan stir fry "spice"...It's a liquid and I only use 1 tablespoon. It has 3 grams of fat and 3 carbs, but it adds a lot to the stir fry.

I'm kinda concerned about all these "extras" that we add like bouillion, etc. All these extras do add up in terms of calories and carbs and might throw us out of ketosis. Should we be concerned about this? I'm new to this diet so I'm no expert but I'm very familiar with Atkins and that too many carbs throw you out of ketosis.

I used to follow the MF website forum and when anyone asked about hair loss, MF answered that if you are concerned about hair loss, you can incorporate up to 1-2 tbl. of canola oil a day into your diet.

Personally, I think adding that much oil could hinder my weight loss, so I have chosen not to use it. But, if I'm in a restaurant and they don't have low fat dressng, I will ask for oil & vinegar. I just use a few drops of the oil and then enough vinegar to coat the salad. I definately don't look for ways to add oil....I use PAM to cook my fish and I can't believe it's not butter spray on my veggies (in moderation because it contains fat and carbs in quantity).

I don't eat any of the snacks either, but not because I'm afraid of adding the calories, I just don't have time to fit them in. I feel like I'm eating or getting ready to eat all the time, lol. :bib:

Nancy, have any thoughts on using oil?

I was thinking the same thing :-P

Here are the rules I have made for myself personally:

1. If it is not on the legal snack list (no more than 2 a day)...
2. If it is not part of my lean and green...
3. Most importantly IF IT DOES NOT SAY MEDIFAST......

IT DOES NOT GO IN MY MOUTH

Remember these are rules I made for Myself and everyone has their own opinons

I guess my biggest concern is eating too many carbs and being thrown out of ketosis. Ketosis is a good thing and is a bonus compared to other diets. I'm losing a lot of weight now because I just started and a lot of it is water weight but I'm concerned about later on, when I'll start losing the real lbs (i.e. fat).

I wonder is Canola oil will help with hair growth? I lost all of mine during chemotherapy....probably not. I guess the oil issue is a personal choice.
