question about height vs. goal weight?

Postby carolannjeanette » August 12th, 2007, 12:01 pm

Hi Everybody!

I am 5 feet 2.5 inches. Usually I just round up and say I am 5'3'', once in a while I might say I am 5'2''.

I am curious: what is other people's height and goal weight and how did you come up with your goal weight? :?:

I looked at a BMI chart and picked 125 for my goal weight (I think I have a medium frame but am not sure how to determine my frame size--does anybody know how?). According to one chart I found online, for a medium frame at 5'3'' the weight should be 121-135.

I would appreciate other's people answers on how they figured this stuff out for themselves!

Thanks!! :-P

Hey there. I'm 5 2 1/2, too and usually round up to 5'3". I picked 135 because it was in the healthy BMI range and I'm in my 50's. I found it to be a good place. I wear size 6-8 comfortably. If I was younger, I'd probably have gone down to 125, but for my age, 135 works.

And because life is not fair, I am 5'7" and will probably be in size 10-12 pants at 135 pounds. Comfortably of course.

Actually, according to the studies that have been done... there isn't much difference in actual bone density versus weight from one person to the next. There is a maximum of about 5% difference, thus, the BMI chart is the best measure of what your weight should be to be healthy.

To be in the healthy range, at 5'2", you should be no more than 137. At 5'3", 140 would be okay. (This is based on the BMI calculator on the TSFL site).

Hope this helps.

Except that the BMI chart doesn't account for how much muscle you have, so someone who lifts weights or works out a lot can weigh more but look smaller.

Body-fat percentage seems to be the BEST way to determine where you should be. But accurate testing can be hard to come by.

I'd suggest picking a preliminary goal weight based on the BMI charts, and then adjusting up or down as you get closer.

Since I'm vertically challenged too I thought I would chime in here. I'm 5'2" and I've chosen 130 lbs. I think that's a little over the BMI chart, but I'm going to gauge how I feel when I get close.

Of course feeling good is a priority, but so is how I look. One of my concerns is wrinkles.

Ole shorty britches, here! 5'1" at my latest height check.
I know I used to be at least 5'2", so wha' happened?
131-133 is about where I land each morning and wear mostly size 8-10.
I'm happy with that, and besides DH says 'no more'!
I'd still sneak in a pound or 2 less if I could.
I think my weight training and aerobics adds some muscle weight...
You'll find your way, CAROL. We all do eventually, by trial and error.

i think size and comfort is the key. i initially picked 160, because i'm active and tend to carry muscle. since then, i've decided to try for 145. i'm just over 5'4, and i weigh 190, but i wear a medium dress shirt and size 14 pants. after i manage to drop the next 40#, i should be pretty small-- but muscular and compact (and floating in skin). :?

your goal should just depends on your body type and what weight leaves you feeling the fittest. when you no longer think twice about whether or not you can do something-- you're there.

Okay this is funny to me because after Tony lost 160 pounds we would just laugh ( and still do ) at the thought of him being big boned. He always said he was and I agreed cause he had very broad shoulders ect. Now he says it was the fat that made them broad! He actually has a very lean stature so we joke around about how he USE to be big boned.

Me on the other hand, I have very LARGE bones, I must at this size, it can't be fat.

hehe

Dr. A always tells us that the difference between a "big" set of bones and average bones is 2 lbs.

So where does the other 50-100 lbs come from that "big boned" people talk about?....:)
