How did you pick your goal weight?

Postby LoriO » January 28th, 2006, 9:03 pm

Honestly, I just thought 150 sounded good. I don't think I will know what I should weigh until I get closer to goal. I am around 5'9" and I think I have a medium frame. I was just curious as to how you all picked the "magic number". Thanks!!

Hiya! I picked mine by using the BMI calculator. I'm 5'5", so 138 is the middle of the healthy range for my height.

I used the BMI calculator, also, but 140 isn't in the middle of the healthy range for me, it's actually at the upper end. So it's sort of my tentative goal. As I get down there, I'm going to base it on how clothes fit, how I feel, how happy I am with what I see in the mirror. My plan is to continue with weight training, and since muscle weighs more than fat, that's going to affect what my final number is. I've never been thin AND in good muscular shape at the same time, so I don't really know what a good number is/will be, but 140 seemed like a reasonable goal for now. :D

I picked mine based on how I looked and felt when I was that weight before. I may adjust it when I get closer, but I'm not sure yet.

I picked mine based on the BMI calculator and that I was pretty comfortable previously at this weight. Once I get there I will see how I feel about it and see if I want to go any farther.

I also used the BMI claculator but one of the higher numbers. I originally wanted to weigh 130lbs but chose 140 and then when I get there I will make a final decision if I want to lose the 10 other pounds.

I actually have very little choice in my goal weight. Uncle Sam has this wonderful chart that leaves very little room for discussion. The Navy wants me at no more than 175 lbs/23.5% body fat. I've been a slackard for a long time but now their getting serious about me either losing the weight or putting me out to pasture early. I'd much rather lose the weight. My goal is the same weight that I was after leaving boot camp in 1980. I can't wait to put my original set of dress blues on after all these years. That's the picture that I want to post when all is said and done.

Great question, LoriO!

I think sometimes we think...well, I looked great at 120 in highschool (or some other time in our young lives) and say, I want to be 120.

At 45, I really don't know what I should weigh. I don't accept that it's normal to weigh 10 or 20 lbs. more in midlife but at the same time...should I really expect to look like I did at 16?

I'm post menopausal and I can say that at the very least, my weight distributes itself differently than it once did.

Currently, I'm at 135. I'm about 5'4". I want to lose another ten and see how I feel. Right now there's just a little too much jiggle to my wiggle. heh.

My Medifast experience, for anyone interested:

Before medifast, I found it impossible to lose even a pound. I felt out of control and only gained. I quit getting on the scale at one point--but the last weight I registered was 148.5.

The first six weeks I lost 7 lbs. (Take courage, slow losers!)
During the next four weeks it became 10 lbs.

After those first two months I went into a sort of maintenance mode where I had at least 3 supplements a day. I watched what other things I ate and as often as possible stuck to a lean and green type dinner.

I lost an additional 3-5 lbs over the course of 3-4 mos. , meaning it's varied a little.

I'm going back full on the program tomorrow morning so...the adventure continues. :)

I think, to get back to your question, it's important to see how you feel. We are all so different. I like the idea of tentative goals. If you know you should be "somewhere between this and that"...get there first.

:)

weight charts

Postby LAwoman » January 29th, 2006, 9:38 am

Hi LoriO

Like most people here, I used the height/weight/bmi chart. I chose the low end of my chart as my goal. Perhaps once I am in the 140-150's (middle-high end of my chart) I'll feel healthy and choose that weight, but for now I feel like I need a specific goal to work towards without giving up.

Good job to you, keep up the good work.

I picked mine by going on my lowest adult weight. The weight I picked is basically what I graduated high school at (almost 16 years ago) It is still higher than what the "charts" say that I should be, but I also want to happily maintain that weight.

I can honestly say that while the charts would have me go lower than my goal weight (by 20 lbs) I would be very happy to reach goal and maintain it. Maybe after getting there and STAYING there for a while I might be motiviated enough to lose the last 20 and be "perfect".

I picked my goal weight from the higher end of the BMI calculator for my height. Although, I've watched Celebrity Fit Club on VH-1 and two of the ladies on there are my height and hovering around 175 and IMHO they look fabulous!!! So, I'm shooting for 155, but won't sneeze at 175! ;)
