Have a lot of questions

Hello everyone...I am looking into the medifast program. It seems costly but I have to do something. I am 5'7" at 215 lbs. I would like to get down to 150. I see talk about a "full fast" and the "modified" program. I think to begin I need the full fast. Looking at the packages online for a month supply it list 49 shakes. Is that enough for a full fast or should I order things seperate. Also how much weight could I possibly lose in 3 months. If I start on April 1st. My Birthday is July 4th and I will be 50 and want to look and feel better.

Can anyone help me with what I should order for 3 months. Will the one month package (ordering 3 month) work for the full fast. Any help is appreciated and sure am glad I found this forum.

Hi there, Guest ~

I may be assuming something here that may not be true for you but if you are thinking the complete fast is best for you because you will lose weight faster than if you are on the 5 & 1 program, there is not an appreciably faster rate of weight loss with the complete. It is far easier for transition when using the 5 &1 and easier socially.

The complete meal replacement program must be done strictly under the supervision of a doctor; a health advisor is not qualified to provide the necessary monitoring for the complete program.

You need about 155 meals for on month so 5 times 31 = 155 meals. Medifast is packaged 7 packets to a box so you'll need about 22 boxes for a one month order. It's about $10 a day for your Medigrub plus whatever you spend for the Lean and Green meal.

There is a first time ordering discount. Many people select the 4 week Variety Package to begin with because it includes an additional free week of food. There are no substitutions; it comes pre-packed so ya get what's packed.

There is a 10% discount for case lots. Most cases contain 12 boxes of product (except for the 55 & 70 Shakes – they have 48 boxes to a case) The BeSlim Club is fabulous –it’s a progressive discount – you can get in it after your first order and once you join, you save 5% for the first three consecutive monthly orders, then 8% for the next three consecutive months and then 12% from month number 7 and beyond for being in the BeSlim Club. It’s a nice reward for loyal customers.


I used to think weight loss programs were expensive; that is, until I began to pay the costs for being overweight: pain in my feet from stress fractures and plantar fasciitis, expensive clothing bills – it costs more for large-size clothing and I used to constantly blow out the seams on my fanny hose because the thighs rubbed holes in them, the expense for Prilosec/ Hi BP Rx / anti-inflammatories/ etc was high, the emotional toils was great. Once I got on the program and saw my weight decline, my energy increase and pain subsided, I thought it was a bargain. Heck, I used to easily spend $12 a day junking on nutritionally deficient food.

The average woman loses about 15-25 pounds the first month and from then on, it can vary but usually about 15 pounds/mo. People who consistently follow the program, consistently reach their health goal.

Various health issues can affect weight loss. I'd suggest reading through the MakeMeThinner Forum for several days - all of your questions will be answered; dig through things a bit.

I started when I was 53 years old and sure do wish I knew about the great Take Shape for Life Program and Medifast products when I was in my 20's and had avoided the years of obesity and heartache.

Thank you for your help. I meant to say the one month packages they offer would be enough for 3 months buying 3 of the packages? So I would assume that if I use the prepackaged month supply that is all I would need to order. Also it sounds as if I could possibly lose 50 pounds in 3 months?

Thanks again and reading the stories here has inspired me.

Hi Guest,

You are about the same weight I was when I started. I started in Jan 2006 at the weight of 212 pounds. In 12 weeks, I had lost 37.5 pounds being 100% compliant on the program. In 5-1/2 months, I had lost 67 pounds, just to give you an idea. Keep in mind everyone is different based on metabolism, age, activity level, gender (yes, men lose faster than women... the rats... but don't they always do things faster then women :roll: ).

Regardless of how fast you lose weight, you are doing something good for your body. Nancy summed it up nicely as she always does. She is truly an inspiration to all of us here.

As far as the costs involved, it does seem expensive at face value. But when I was thinking about it, I sat down and calculated how much I was spending at lunch (I went out every day), all the inbetween snacks I was purchasing, and all the JUNK I was buying for home. Trust me, it added up and totally convinced me to begin this program. Remember, this is a temporary phase of your life. As soon as you lose your weight, you will gradually transition back to everyday foods. While on the program, the additional expense was actually in those wonderful SKINNY clothes I had to keep buying. Let me tell you, when you can go up to a normal clothes rack and find your size with no problems - that is a wonderful feeling. Especially when you don't have to search the store for the larger size section!

Definitely be mindful about the full fast idea. I have read that once you have done it for a few weeks, your body has a really hard time digesting real food and transition can actually be painful as you introduce new things. I may be wrong but I THINK I read that somewhere - please someone correct me if need be.

As to the expense - I can tell you that I did not sit down and do all the math, but it did take several months before I believed I had the money to spend on this program. And since going on it, there is a lot more money to go around. I am not struggling to pay monthly bills because I am not paying $300 a month for groceries and then an additional $200 a month on 'let's order in because I'm too tired to cook' food. All the money I wasted on fast food is going to real expenses and MF has been the best choice I could have made for my physical AND financial well-being where food is concerned.

You will not regret it. I have lost 33# in less than 3 months and that includes the month of January when I was cheating all the time. I didn't really lose anything that month, and in fact gained, so really it was 33# in more like 2 months. Everyone is different and I started with much more to lose than you, but you will have great results.

To answer your questions – Yep, it IS possible to lose about 50 pounds in 3 months; I did so – in fact, I lost about 60 pounds in 3 months.

I did not cheat once. My health and my goals were more important to me than the fat-laden goodies I used to consume; I was determined I would not let the cheesecake win.

My husband lost 49 pounds in three months. We went on a three week vacation to Hawaii and he gained back 7 pounds, I lost about 5 pounds - we came home very 'fluffy' like little puff toads - I think in part due to the long flight, and the warm temps. My ankles were swollen and looked like elephant ankles. My husband quickly dropped those 7 pounds - like within the week and he lost 10 more pounds and reached his goal within the next month. I had a lot more flabber to lose so I kept right on shaking it off through Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, had a surgery the first week of January and arrived at my goal on Valentine's Day.

As Keri wrote, each of us is uniquely designed and our metabolism, heredity, general state of health, stress and rest cycles, activity levels, etc. vary and they all enter into the rate of weight loss. We cannot guarantee that your experience will be the same as mine or anyone else’s but we can promise you that you will lose weight IF you follow the program and you will lose the stored fat more rapidly than on any other program.

Nickie, thank you for your contribution here, too – most everyone realizes that they actually save money while they are saving their health. For me, it was hard to have to ‘pay up front’ for my groceries because we were accustomed to shopping every couple of days and dropping $50 here, $20 bucks at a restaurant, etc. appeared to me to be so much less than the $300 upfront we paid for my Medigrub.

I was so dense, I never added up all the incidental trips to the candy machine, the drive thru receipts from Krappy Kreme, the cost of the gut bombs at the Fallen Arches, the malts and fishburger at Artery Queen, the double whoppers with extra mayo at Burglar King, etc. I spent a ton of $ on calorie-dense food and nearly weighed a ton because of it. It ALL adds up and we spent way more on empty calories than on real nutrition.

Yes, you may order a 4 week Variety Package each month for three months. The initial order is the only order that will gift you with the extra free week, all the others will be 4 weeks of food.

Most people, do not continue to order the 4 week pre-packaged boxes of Medifast but rather select the products they like the most. The 4 week Variety Package is a great introduction to what is available - it's like a buffet.

You need 5 boxes of Medifast meal replacements per week plus your Lean and Green meal that you select and buy at the grocery store or restaurant.

5 boxes per week times 4 weeks = 20 boxes of food.

Generally we recommend that a person order 21-22 boxes of Medifast per month so they have plenty of food on hand; if they are especially active or have a longer day and are hungrier and need a 6th packet, they will have it. To be successful at winning the health quest, real losers are prepared with packets at all times and in all places...

Of those 21-22 boxes, 4 of them can be bars – if you use one bar a day, you’ll need 4 boxes. If you do not order a 4 week variety package, you may then select whichever 4 flavors of bars you want.

We suggest people have Medifast Oatmeal for breakfast because it is glycemically low after a night of fasting and does not rapidly raise our blood sugar (which can lead to a rapid drop and hunger, feeling wiped out and searching for more carbs).

If you have Medfast Oatmeal daily for breakfast, you’ll need to order 4 boxes of Medifast oatmeal for a one month supply. Some people prefer to have the Medifast Scrambled Eggs, the Hot Cocoa, or the Cappuccino, or a shake for brekkie. It’s up to you.

For best weight loss and hunger control, we suggest a person have two or three shakes a day. If you go that route, you’ll need 8-12 of the 21-22 boxes to be shakes.

I used shakes only for nearly all of my weight loss. When I first started, there were not as many meal options as there are now; I also did not feel like I could trust myself with the bars when they were first available because I was out of control with food and I felt like I would eat more than one/day.

Some people like soup every day; if so, of the 21-22 boxes of products you order for the month, 4 of them would need to be soup/stew/chili.

The program is structured and yet there is room for much variety and many choices.

Wow I am impressed with so many reponses. I think I will go ahead and order the variety package they offer for one month. I will order 3 of them since I am assuming what I read that it will cover all my needs. So other than buying my lean and green foods from the store, I guess I will be set.

You all have been great and I apreciate all the help. I have registered now and will sign in for the next post.

Ok I am registered and awaiting my program. I think my problem has been my lack of discipline. As realize as I get older it is harder to keep the weight off. I know what needs to be done but is too easy to cheat. I look at pictures from 14 years ago when I was a heavy duty work out freak. I was an aerobic instructor and personal trainer and now I can't stand to look at myself. I rarely leave the house for fear of having people whisper behind my BIG behind about my weight gain. I have no excuse for not exercising since I have a full gym with a bowflex, free weights, treadmill, step and every tape you can imagine. Just need the motivation again.

I love this forum, I think it will be a great help to me. I got the eye roll :roll: from my son for ordering medifast. He believes I should be able to do it without spending the money. If that was the case I would not have gained the weight. My big downfall to be honest is going to be giving up beer. Yes beer! I love a few beers on the weekend especially with the nice weather coming up. I tell myself just be disciplined one week at a time!

Welcome! Glad you joined us! :) You might want to pick up some Splenda packets, Molly McButter and Molly McCheese, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray, Mrs Dash and maybe some Walden Farms calorie-free, fat-free, sugar-free dressings/marinades. I know my local grocery store has the Walden Farms stuff so maybe yours does too.

Those are the things most people seem to use occasionally to spice up the food. I LOVE Mrs Dash in the chili and minestrone soups... MMMMM.

You will soon be on the prowl again wearing much smaller work-out clothes!

If you have NOT been consistently exercising, do NOT begin until the end of week three...if you HAVE been exercising, cut it back - like in half.

Be sure to stay well hydrated, have a shake about an hour before your workout and a bar shortly after the work out. Do not huff, puff or sweat the first three weeks of the program and stay close to your Health Advisor for personal assistance.

You'll be raising a tankard of shakes for a while - no alcohol while you're in the thinnin' process, Kitty.
