Am I Flushing Away Vitamins and Minerals Along with the Fat?

Postby kristinburdine » March 10th, 2007, 7:55 am

How much water is too much water ? I drink between 80 and 104 ounces a day ( I have about 50 pounds to lose ). When I started MF 4 weeks ago, I ordered some high-quality vitamin/mineral supplements at a price of about $130 for a 2-month supply. I would hate to think that all this water I'm drinking is flushing the vitamins out before my body can utilize them. At the same time, MF puts SO much emphasis on drinking 64 ounces or more of water per day. I don't want to give up my water for fear of slowing my weight-loss, but I don't want to lose my vitamins either. Anyone got any thoughts on this ?

Good question. I also take vitamins/minerals every day, as well as fish oil supplements, so if anyone has an answer, I'd be interested, too. I never thought of it before.

uh, it doesn't work like that.
your body is a well-designed machine. the water isn't to encourage weightloss-- it's because it's what the body requires to function normally. when the body cannot function normally, metablism slows to conserve energy (calories) until the perceived famine is over. mf has a good balance of vitamins in it already... and, no, you will not "flush it out."
you aren't even drinking excessive amounts at this point, so i'm not sure why it would be a concern.

I had a feeling the vitamins were absorbed and not instantly flushed out of the stomach by gallons of water - but it never hurts to ask!

......and if you read the ingredients of the meal replacements, you will find that they are FULL of these needed vitamins and minerals. No need for additional pills or supplements. The main things to watch are your medication levels if you are on any (this is why we stress being under a Dr.'s care), and also be aware of headaches and leg cramps (signs or sodium and potassium imbalance).
If you get headaches or feel light headed, have some broth that has some sodium. If you get leg cramps, have a fast soup (MF product) or something with potassium.

Other than this, just be aware of your body. MF is a great, well balanced program that doesn't require all of those extras that "other" programs encourage.
Pre WLS 460
Low after WLS 300
Start of MF 350
Previous MF low 280
Restart MF 330

I used to manage the Vitamin Shoppe and learned quite a bit then. First, the RDA's on the backs of food labels and vitamins were established in the 1930's and never updated. So when you see that "Cap'n Crunch" has "100%" of the RDA of Vitamin C, remember that those values are 70 years old, and our soil has been much depleted since then, to where we dont get the same minerals as we once did. And of course, our bodies need more than what Cap'n Crunch can offer.
Also, most vitamins are water soluble, which means that if your body already has enough, it will excrete it naturally. This is unlike fat soluble vitamins (A, K) which you have to monitor the intake.
Things that can prevent absorption -- being overweight (often are undernourished) and having a lot of excess stuff in the intestine. Water helps that, fiber helps that (but don't assume b/c you pooh a lot that you're "good." Not always true.)
A good idea could be to split your dose to 2x a day, and take some at night. A lot of people do a "cleanse" before starting a diet plan, as it revs your absorption and even your metabolism.
I love vitamins!!
