Why so many Doctors don't understand!!!!!

Postby elle4nelly » February 24th, 2004, 1:01 pm

I woke up this morning full of hopes! And when I read Tami’s Post I smiled because I felt good on Medifast and know that I am not alone in this. I was so happy this morning. That is until 1pm, when I landed at the Dr. Office. This stupid woman, looks at my chart and say:” How did you lose 29lbs in just over a month??” She looked horrified! So I proudly told her that I was on Medifast..before I even had a chance to say more..She snapped and said: “ I don’t like this! That is a stupid way of losing weight! Remember what happened to Oprah? She lost all that weight and got fat and even fatter all over again!! “ At which point she had the nerve to sneaker and with that stupid grin on her face I would have loved to erase with a Slap , she says: “ Why can’t you do weight Watcher!!!”
I got totally P..ss..d OFF!! I looked at her full of anger and say! What gives you the right to be an authority on weight loss? Your years in medical school? If loosing weight was as easy as just going to your Stupid Weight watcher than why is America so FAT? And why most people who go on weight watchers not keep the weight off just like Oprah? She then tried to butt in few words BUT I wouldn’t LET! I was going to talk and say al I had to say to her first! SO I told her ..let me finish first! YOU do not and will never know how it feels to be me. How painful it is to be this overweight! You do not understand people like me and you never will! We, overweight people , are not textbook examples needing standard solutions! Sure we didn’t get fat overnight! But you do not know the pain of losing yourself so far deep into 100’s lbs of fat that you even forget that you are a Human being, That you are somebody and you deserve a good life too!! I had to go through the fires of pain and isolation before I hit my point of no return! Well I AM up now, I AM like a lion going for a KILL ! And I don’t care what you, him, or all these people who think they know something about how it feels to be fat and how to loose weight the “ proper way” have to say!! And YOU do not know that I am not going to succeed but already YOU anticipate my fall! Don’t they teach you “ Understanding” in Medical school?

She turned 50 shades or dark purple and turned quickly to another subject!! I was soooooo MAD…I could have raved and raved! She’s a freaking Gynecologist for Christ sake!

I really don’t know why I let her get me so upset. And even though I really gave her a peace of my mind…I am soooooo sick of people who have never been obese in their life trying to give me stupid advice! Go away!!!!!!! I don’t want to lose a pound a week for the next 2 years and I am not going to come back this way…I am not Oprah… I AM SOMEBODY who wants to be her best and it matters WHAT PATH I CHOOSE BUT WHAT MATTERS MOST IS THAT I GET TO THE END THE JOURNEY! I HAVE A DREAM…yes AMERICA…OBESE PEOPLE AND WE ARE PEOPLE HAVE DREAMS!!!!!!!!!!
Is going for your dreams such a bad thing if you chose to reach for it through the path less traveled?

Somebody please tell me!

You Go Girl!

Postby ErikaEastwood » February 24th, 2004, 1:28 pm

My mom did the Medifast when she was 29--shes 43 now..she HAS kept the weight off so I know that it can be done! I havnt experienced any negativity yet but if I do I will just tell them the truth..When I was searching for a healthy and right way to lose weight I ask my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to help me make the right decision. I did the diet pill thing and that was a MESS. I knew this wasnt the healthy way to go...I finally remembered my mom doing this Medifast but I wasnt sure I could go through with this very discipline program or even afford it since my husband is the only one that works in my family. I believe I made the right decision cause not only did the Lord provide me and is still providing with the money to buy it. I am losing weight without having to torture myself or be speeding and out of my mind on some pills. Jesus has give me the strength to do this and im also learning what to do and not to do after I am done with this program, you all have taught me alot these past 12 days-- Ive done very well adjusting to the Medifast shakes and I also found this board where I have noticed other Christians gather for support also. So it must be God!!!! Its also helped me with my Christian walk such as showing me other areas of my life that need discipline-- I dont know why I am saying all this on your post, forgive me if it sounds like im talking about myself to much but you do inspire me with all your posts and support and dont worry about what other people say as long as its not affecting your health. I completely trust this program and would recommend it to anyone. Keep living the dream!

Nelly Nelly Nelly!!! You are most certainly a feisty thang!!

I'm proud of you for standing up to her. Sometimes doctors think they are god (little G on purpose here).

And it IS frustrating to get weight loss advice from someone who has never experienced being overweight.

I know you gave her food for thought (enough to choke a horse!). I hope she remembers it the next time she is in this situation with a patient.

Nelly,
This is wonderful. Thank you for talking to at least one person out there that is speaking without thinking. I don't know how many times I've had overweight doctors and nurses tell me "You're too fat, you need to lose weight." That's it, no help after that. And then Weight Watchers...well, you can eat 1000 calories a day and just have ice cream and get nowhere. Medifast is balanced and gives you what you need when you need it.

Yes, your weight loss is more than they generally like to see in that amount of time...but that is average this and average that. For someone that doesn't know your situation...well, I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it.

And one of the worst things is that she or any doctor should be HAPPY FOR YOU. Your health is already BETTER, I'm sure.

On a similar note, I went to my endocrinologist who's always watching my weight, and I was all excited that I was down almost 30 pounds. He didn't even notice! That actually made me relax though, because it made me realize that this is my thing, and how I feel is what matters...not how someone that sees you only a few times a year.

Anyway, good for you. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

Thank you Erika, Laurie and Jeanette!

I feel better now! It's been 3 hours since I left her office! She just struck the wrong cord. We may all have a common goal, but I don't need someone to dismiss the path I chose because it is not the one most travelled. I don't like Ignorance! It breeds intolerance and lack of understanding! The world is so full of bleeding wounds already... and it's people like her who don't even try to understand others who rub me the wrong way! It wasn't even the fact that she doesn't agree with medifast. I can live with that because for as long as there's 6 billions of us on this God Given planet...we will not always agree on something. But that does not give anyone the right to dismiss other's dreams and ways they go about to achieve it. And then giving me example of failures...Oprah didn't make it!! What's that got to do with me? I am not Oprah...I am not pauline, Francine or bertha! I am Nelly. This is my dream and this is how I want to achieve it. you may tell me " If I was you I'd take this other path over here" I understand that because I respect other people...But don't say to me " Nelly, your chosen path is stupid!!! So and so failed and YOU ARE TOO, you should take this one over here"
No! I don't think so! I am not a textbook exemple. I don't need standard answers. I am real, I am a human being and YOU are not GOD. So what if others have failed? so I should live my life never wondering far from the rest? If stand apart from the rest...does that make me crazy? ...oooohhh you dared Medifast so you're bad!!! can't you see that everybody does it this way?? Is trying a different diet from the norm a crime?
Sorry but ...I wasn't born a clone. I am very real! Let me chose my path, after all it is only my dream, my destiny ...My life!

Medifast I will stick to! I have never been afraid to beat the odds...not now...not never!

I will see my dream come true! And yeah....i could have been a little more tolerant of her ignorance....But you know what? She still had her teeth in her mouth when I left her! So I must have done good! hi! Hi!
Just kidding...I haven't been in a fight since i was 13. I did win though...and he was a boy!! What can I say...I grew up with dad and 4 brothers....

Thanks Guys..for letting me vent.....

I'll keep on shaking over here!

;)

Doctors

Postby Maisie » February 24th, 2004, 5:14 pm

Most physicians have little if any background in nutrition. Next time one of them gives you any inteference just refer them to the two year study just completed at Johns Hopkins University with respect to weight loss with Medifast and Type 2 Diabetes. It was a resounding success in Medifast's favor. These "gods" and I've known a few of them in my life outside the office, are pretty taken aback when patients actually have some clinical knowledge. The actual data can be found online quite easily. Throws them off every time. The only way to fight ignorance is with knowledge. Somebody must of said that along the way.

Dear Nelly---

I am about speechless with pride for your speaking your mind the way you did --- not enough people approach Doctors as they should be approached - provider of service .... and guess what>>> I AM YOUR CUSTOMER ....I PAY YOUR SALARY -----

and yet, while we wouldn't take unsolicited advice from the guy at the garage or listen to him laughing at us for using pine scented air fresheners in OUR CAR --

-- MOST people feel they have no say or rights once they cross the threshhold to a medical office .... BS - I don't care how tightly you have crammed your schedule..YOU will spend the time with me that I require! I don't care if you're pushing a certain drug - I have a choice ----your opinion, you are entitiled BUT don't think it then becomes mine or you will shove it down my throat ----TIMES HAVE CHANGED AND THE BALANCE HAS SHIFTED IN HEALTHCARE. Today your patients are far more educated about our illness, body, options and results if we choose to be ... and I know you hate that (in many cases) ---- you can no longer walk through an entire day with your god-complex .. chances are someone will challenge you and rightfully so.... I know managed care screwed up your $$$ numbers - but you have been brought to the table and can be held more accountable and the first in line to do that is "me" - I AM YOUR CUSTOMER AND I WON'T TAKE CRAP FROM YOU ANYMORE THAN I WOULD FROM A RUDE WAITRESS, CLERK, SALESMAN, ETC.... Wake up and smell the alcohol - YOU, my dear DOCTOR are a service professional with a certificate hanging on the wall... and by the way, Insurance agents, realtors, etc. ... also have certificates on their walls.

Ahem, sorry to get on my soapbox BUT - I've been going through a change in perception with regard to healthcare professionals over the last ten years - and here I am today.

The good news---- there are many doctors that will be supportive and listen and see the value of a patient actively participating in their own well-being. Shop around.

I saw my doctor yesterday - new within the last six months - she was thrilled with my loss, my decision to find something that works for me, my attitude and apparent improved health AND as she said "I am always so happy to talk to the successes, people willing to take responsibility for their wellness - unfortunately, people often look to me to have a fix for everything."

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY ---- THAT IS WHAT WE ARE DOING EVERYDAY - I could not say enough about the value of this forum and all of you wonderful people - the support, advice, care and posts are all a critical part of my success. FOR-UM = FOR-US.....no lies and no "ums" when I need help.

Thank you all --- Nelly you rock - the voice of millions - certainly the thousands here on radio FREEME!

WE WILL do this together!!!!!! :D

Way to go Sisters!!
I think so much of our success with this IS about finding your voice. There has been so much societal shame put on overweight people....denying their personhood. I have been in the nursing profession for more years than I like to say. Dr.'s with huge ego's and one way ideas cut so many people off at the knees. Their knowledge is valuable, but in no way absolute. We are more than capable of listening to our own bodies and it is our RIGHT to do so. Here's to some righteous anger! Stay strong. No one can diminish you unless you let them. Peace, Jade

My doctor was negative about MF

Postby bunnylady » July 31st, 2005, 1:39 pm

Hi, I started seeing my doctor 4 months ago when I moved to Texas- I take Lipitor and blood pressure medications and needed refills asap- oh this doctor also gives me Cortisone shots in both knees. So I go for my appointment and check with him to see if I am all okay to do Medifast. He says he was head of a weight loss department at Sharp Hospital in So. Calif. He used a similar product to Medifast. He gave me the info on it before I left. So then I think I'm okay- he likes this- he then tells me Medifast is such a RIPOFF- he told me to make my own oatmeal etc- well, I had been all 100% MF products for a week so I think I 'll try what he advises, so I used Quaker oatmeal- well, I regained 3 lbs--so this week- its 100% again and ****** him. His diet was just as expensive as Medifast.

He also irked me when he proceeded to question me about what I do. Well, I am 57, no longer working because my husband makes a tidy sum as an Engineer. So I told him I watch my grand child and go walking etc. so he replies "you basically live off your husband" My mouth flew open and I gasped- he said he didn't mean it that way, but the ***** made me depressed for 48 hours- (its hard to diet when someone does that to you) now I don't want to go back to him- I do in a way to show him I can get slim but yuck- I don't want anyone not in my corner- so he charged me $400 for that appt- smuck! I have insurance and I'm sure they'll corrall him but doctors make me mad

I'm glad you told your GYN off!

Doctors

Postby Jan » July 31st, 2005, 5:26 pm

Whoa
Most Dr.s are not board certified in nutrition. Dr. Wayne Anderson who is the Medical Director of both Medifast and Take Shape for Life is one of the first Drs who is. Not only that but he is a well recognized critcal care physician. It's really difficult when Drs venture into areas in which they are not qualified. Many are highly specialized and are great with what they know but that's it. I had to laugh when my children were young and spend a considerable amount of time at a friend's home. It so happened her husband was ( and still is ) a cardiologist. I remember saying to him one day "well I never worry when my kids are with you because if something happened -- like a broken leg -- you would know just what to do. To which he replied " Yea, take them right to the E.R." This really put things into perspective for me. Doctors, the really great ones ( it so happens my friend is a great cardiologist )-- realize that they don't know everything. My daughter ( who happens to be a senior in pre-med) and I have had many discussions about this. Up until now (and unfortunatly many still do not) nutritional training was a rareity in medical schools. I guess it comes down to the question -- would you have a dermatologist perform a complicated knee surgery ?? How about even a cardiac surgeon. No -- well then lets let physicians who are board certified in nutrition (Dr. Wayne Anderson) deal with our nutritional issues. :D
