What did I do wrong?

Postby ErinGoneWild » February 3rd, 2006, 12:49 pm

Okay, I'm on day three here and have liked everything except the oatmeal and the chili.

The oatmeal flavor was good once I added come cinamon and maple extract but it never thickened up and I followed the directions to a T.

The chili was horrible even with added spices. I followed the directions, stirred and stirred and stirred and there still was there hard crunchy pieces in it. I couldn't even finish the whole bowl.

I know that this stuff isn't suppose to taste like 5 star cusine but I would hope the chili would at least be edible. What am I doing wrong, any pointers?

Erin,
Try making it ahead of time and letting it sit for a couple hours. I add onion, salsa, hot sauce, and lots of chili powder to mine and really enjoy it that way.............

I finally got the chili right last night. I used two packets and 8 oz of water. I then added 3 spoons of salsa and a bit of tabasco. I brought it to a boil and then let it simmer for about 5 minutes. I put it in the fridge overnight and had 1/2 of it for lunch today. It was actually pretty good. Now, if I could only get the Creamy Broccoli Soup to taste right.....

As for the oatmeal, add a packet or two of splenda. I think it's one of the very best things...all of the flavors are yummy! :)

Cindy,
For the cream of broc I add onion and a teaspoon of 'better than boullion' chicken, some chives and 'mixed up salt'. I really like it that way........and I stick pretty much to the same 5-6 MF products. I don't have the patience for many more ingredients than that......

I notice that I go in phases though, for a while I was crazy about the choc mint bar, but I don't like them now......... :idontknow:

I'm sitting here at work on my lunch enjoying my chili. It's new to me, I just got my first order of it. You'll probably like it once you doctor it up! I read lots of ideas here!

I added an extra 4 oz. of water, diced celery, beef boullion, garlic powder, Mexican chili powder and a couple teaspoons of HOT salsa. I let it simmer for about 10 min. and then brought it to work and refridgerated it until lunch time. I nuked it for 2 1/2 min and it is YUMMY! :chef:
It smells great too! :D

The oatmeal thickens for me if I add the right amt. of water and I stir and bring to a boil. Then I cover and let it sit for 5 min. or so. I add Splenda or cinnamon to mine too.

Cyn- I'm still playing with the Cream of Broccoli soup too. I add extra water and add a little chicken boullion, Molly McButter and I have added about 1/4 cup chopped fresh broccoli a couple times. (ssshhhhh!!) I also add a splash of 1/2 and 1/2.

Don't give up, just try different spices and seasonings that you enjoy!
I enjoy cooking so I'm having fun spicing stuff up! :bib:

Erin,

I think the trick is finding which products are best when made on the stove-top as opposed to the microwave. The chili is definitely better done on the stove-top. I put mine in a non stick saucepan 2 hrs. before I plan to eat and let it simmer on very low heat. Then turn the heat up the last few minutes. And I always use a full cup of water, two Tbsp. of salsa, a dash of cumin, a dash of chili powder and some beef bullion granules. I have to say, the chili is my favorite lunch!

I never really liked the taste or texture of the oatmeal. It was either runny or like glue when cooked in the microwave. Before going on Medifast I always had a bowl of Quaker oatmeal for breakfast and going from that to the MF oatmeal...well...it wasn't an easy transition for me. Soooo...I started making MF oatmeal pancakes and using Walden Farms pancake syrup and YUM, I love 'em! Another thing I discovered is the pancakes turn out better when baked in the oven! Look up the oatmeal cookie recipe and just make two big pancakes! I also keep things interesting by trying different spices (nutmeg, cinnamon) and extracts (almond, strawberry, cherry).

Now if someone could just come up with a way to doctor up the nanner puddin!

I generally use a little less water than the oatmeal directions call for. Gets thicker, tastes better to me. And, as others have said, the splenda really helps. My first time out with the oatmeal, I wasn't impressed, but it has grown on me and I really enjoy it now. Especially the stuff with the blueberries . . . mmmmm, blueberries . . .

It's funny, I was just going to post that I had my best chili experience yet. I mixed it up ahead of time with 4 oz water, a hefty dose of cumin and a little bit of Better Than Bouillon chili base. Left it in the fridge a day or so, then nuked it. Delicious!

Don't feel bad. I can't make the chilli taste good either and I have been cooking and baking, even catering, all my life. I mean, it was a serious toss up between teaching and chef school. But, still, I wanna throw that chilli out the window when I try to cook it up. Mine is always too watery or dry or something. I cannot make it look like the picture. I have written down some suggestions and when I feel like attempting it again, I will. As of now, I have never had success with it.

NOW, as for oatmeal, I love it either a little runny or with just the right amount of H20. I do add splenda or stevia and cinnamon or vanilla. But, sometimes I just eat it as is. I love it!
