I am a member of a forum awfully similar in setup to this one. A few of our members (we do a lot of things in person together-it's an atv forum) have lost PLENTY of weight with MF. I finally decided I'm ready to jump in.
Here are my issues (which are sort of combined)
1st-I have done Atkins in the past, with pretty good success. I was not able to continue living my life on diet coke and pepperoni sticks and had to give it up. I then got pregnant, etc., etc.. I am noticing some discussion of Ketosis-and that was the main goal with Atkins. I am getting fearful that medifast is just a severe carb restricter, which makes me fear that I wont be able to keep the weight off once I get into the maintaining portion!!! (someone please fill me in )
2nd-I am still nursing my nearly 8 month old baby. My coach said as long as baby is getting 60% of intake not from nursing, I should be okay... I want to know the general concensus on this. I am BEYOND ready to start this, because unlike some lucky folks I GAINED weight while nursing. How great is that!? But, I am beyond ready to lose it. I just need to know if I need to totally cut my daughter off or if I can still nurse her at night time if possible. My concern here is nutrition and KETONES!!!
I'm so dang excited about trying this and also that there is a forum I am comfortable with!
PS-Of important note to you all-My doctor was "more than happy" to write me an Rx to begin the program and run it through my "cafeteria plan" to pay for it out of pre-tax dollars. I was pretty happy about both of those items! |

Hi Summergirl.
First, on the Ketosis issue... this program (its not a diet... diets don't work), puts you in a very light state on fat burning (for most it doesn't even register on the ketone strips). Its basically a 40-40-20 plan which means its 40% carbs and protein and 20% fat. Its muscle sparing, eventhough its so low in calories.
On the nursing issue, it is not suggested at all to be on the 5-1 or the 6-0 program while you are still nursing. You can do a maintenance type program (4-2) or something similar, but you need more nutrition while nursing.
Glad you have decided to start. We look forward to hearing more about your success.

Hi there,
I'm just catching up today... Are you still taking your pre-natals??... if so be careful .. I would not do the full 5/1 as long as you are. You're getting double of some of the fat soluable vitamins and some can build up a toxicity in your body. The water soluables are no problem .. just spendy urine
As to ketosis .. we don't even call it that anymore because it is sooo confusing. I've recieved phone calls and e-mails .. worried people on the other end .. "My stick didn't turn purple" ... welllll now are following the program exactly??? Then don't worry .. the fat will be going. We don't want you in a strong state of ketosis ... you're doing great.

Thanks, everyone! I haven't been taking prenatals for awhile-I'm bad with that .
I started the 5 and 1 today. I feel pretty great, so far. I'm not accustomed to drinking so much water, so much of my day was spent in the bathroom. I'm truly looking forward to this and can't wait to see some progress. I feel "stronger" already!
I had someone tell me today that there is some sort of recipe with the oatmeal that you can make a muffin/cookie with it. I didn't enjoy the apple/cinnamon this morning. I'll keep an open mind though... |

Glad you made it through the first day. There is a recipe on the box for either cookies or muffins (depending on the box). There are also recipes in Lean Cuisine here for muffins, brownies, and pancakes that utilize the eggs and oatmeals (with pudding).

| Your tastes will change too.. I hated the oatmeal at the beginning, but trying it again after a month I realized I really liked it, especially with a pinch of pumpkin pie spices and stevia. |

I just finished my final "meal" of day 4. Last evening, I began to wonder if I was having too much of the "lean" in my lean and green. I pondered overnight and this morning about it. I had made a pact with my friend who started mf two days prior to me to NOT WEIGH for one week.
I fell victim to the scale this morning... I weighed and was EXTREMELY happy to find I was down 5.5 pounds. I felt a spring in my step all day long.
A few other interesting things to note:
1) A coworker asked me if I had on new makeup-because my "Skin looked great"-I was "glowing" today said another.
2) I had an abundant amount of energy this afternoon and mental clarity that I forgot existed. (I have a small baby and am up a lot overnight!)
3) I'm addicted to water and actually enjoying it.
4) I walk around with my head held high-already... I feel as though I "know a little secret" that not everyone else knows quite yet...
The secret to this wonderfulness is Medifast. These products are great. I don't feel deprived. I felt "tough" while I ate my cream of chicken soup with some celery sticks while my coworkers feasted on Birthday Cake, and a Mexican Fiesta at work. I wasn't the least bit bothered by not eating what they were having. I made the birthday cake and didn't even try it! I just want to tell everyone about this! It's amazing.
My daughter is nearly weaned. Today was the first day that I didn't pump at first. We're going to get there.... |
